I’m sure there have been times when you have looked at a stack of books or almost-new clothes and wondered what to do with them. I know I have. Now we can donate them to raise money for charity. Sometime ago we had covered NGOs like ToyBank that collect sports equipment and share it with children who need it the most. And recently when Maya Goyel wrote to me about her initiative of a Thrift Shop fundraiser, I had to share it with you.
Back Alley Thrift Shop is an initiative by Radhika Dhawan and Maya Goyel. Says Maya, “What we do at Back Alley is have a collection drive where we collect unused products from people in terms of clothing, accessories, stationery etc and sell it to raise funds for a charity. There are so many times that people have at home that they never use or for example clothing worn only once and then don’t know what to do with those clothes. So many times people buy things and never use them. And these things need not be wasted. This is how we decided to start the Thrift Shop. Whatever is collected is then screened – we make sure the products are in good condition to be re-sold. Then whatever is made from the sale – is donated to a specific charity; this time it is the Inner Wheel, Queen’s Necklace Chapter, Mumbai.”
She adds, “This initiative is a not for profit initiative. This is the second sale we will be having – the first one was on the 1st June, 2013 which was a tremendous success, hence the decision to have it twice a year.
