To set the record straight: No, I don’t have loose ‘vowel’ syndrome. The extra ‘o’ in ‘Bambooo’ and ‘a’ in ‘Spaa’ are not my doing! All blame for this spelling mutilation should be directed towards Faarooq and Zehra Merchant, husband and wife duo behind the Bambooo Tree All Day Spaa that finds itself plonked in a leafy lane of Bandra’s trendy Pali Hill neighbourhood.

It was the day before my best friend’s wedding and as Best Man, I had taken it upon myself to treaty the groom du jour (and greedy little me!) to a half day of pampering and sprucing up before his trip to the altar.

Looking at both our calloused and grotty excuses for feet, Zehra quickly banished us to the spa’s verandah for a spot of Fish Pedicure (Rs 600 plus taxes). A good half an hour into our job as live fish food, with all our dead skin nipped at by the starving Garra Rufa Doctor Fish, we sat down for a Parafin Pedicure (Rs 1,000 plus taxes). After the obligatory trio of pumice stone cleaning of the feet, reflexology massage and the clipping of our hideously neglected toe nails, warm paraffin wax was poured over our feet, which were then wrapped up in aluminum foil which I’m sure made us look like back up dancers at a Lady GaGa concert! Ignoring the smirks from the other patrons who were all women, by the way, we sipped our apple-cranberry teas and got busy deciding what we wanted to subject ourselves to next.

While my friend opted for the Candle Massage (Rs 3,000 plus taxes) wherein lit candles were slowly allowed to melt into fragrant oils (not wax, mind you!) that were then used to massage him with, I on the other hand chose the spa’s signature Bamboo Massage (Rs 3,000 plus taxes). Incorporating Oriental massage techniques with heated bamboo stalks, the massage was an hour long journey into blissful relaxation.

The therapy started off with the application of a choice of essential oils designed to “calm the body into a serene submission”, or so my therapist let me know. Next, lightly warmed bamboo stalks were knead onto my body in tandem, each stroke easing away the tense musculature. A hot towel application rounded off the session that I fervently wished would go on and on and on…But sadly, our boy’s spa day time was up and reality beckoned. But not before we promised to this again soon.

Now you tell me. Why should girls have all the fun?
