When a work meeting gets over sooner than expected and I happen to be in Bandra, I go graffiti hunting. Bandra Reclamation, bang opposite the Sealink, when heading towards Lilawati Hostpital, I often passed a subway, a part of which is abandoned. Even from a distance it seemed full of art. Last week, I decided this will be the hunting ground; I needed to shoot.

Filled with hand painted and spray painted graffiti from floor to ceiling, the subway is quite a delight. I quickly found the large ‘Celebrate Bandra 2005’ mural. Some googling later, I discovered that most of the art was actually from 2005. Some sections had been painted over or scratched or cracked, but the ceilings and most of the walls still retained art work from almost ten years ago. And I stumbled upon an interesting post about an art piece on the ceiling that got the artist, Delwyn Remedios, a seat in NID.

Different sections have been painted by different artists and some of art work was particularly interesting for me. The influences seem varied. From flowing line drawings to text bookish diagrams and billboard style paintings, the vibrant variety of the artwork is fascinating. So without further ado, here are some shots from the beautifully decaying subway, or as I found it to be, a street art gallery. Here’s hoping it stays strong and is not attacked in the name of ‘cleanliness’.

I remember doing the ROBOTZ graffiti with friends in Bandra back in 2002-2004. I don’t remember the exact date, but this was before the Celebrate Bandra 2005 painted the ceilings.
