Food Bytes: Kid’s Menus, The Latest Foodie Fad In Mumbai

Just the other day I was having a long overdue, lazy Sunday brunch with a friend of mine and her four-year-old ‘high-on-energy’ son with an enviously large appetite to match. We were at the Bandra branch of a hip-n-happening deli chain (that shall remain nameless!) that is (hint, hint…) an offshoot of a popular fine dining Colaba restaurant, famous for its fusion fare. Now, not only was the said deli ill-prepared to entertain our ‘Little Mister Hungry’ with a severe dearth of kiddy-friendly seating, doodle place mats, cutlery, crockery etc etc, they didn’t even bother to pay heed to our requests of making a few of their dishes kid-friendly. To make things clearer, our query if they could give us smiley fries or even curly fries in lieu of the rosemary fries (admittedly a strange flavour for kids to appreciate!) was met with a poker faced “NO”. I mean, they couldn’t even manage to come up with a twisty colourful straw for his peanut butter milkshake, for crying out loud!

That episode got me thinking about the apparent lack of kid’s menus in our city’s restaurants, leading me to a month-long investigation of sorts. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. For the results have not just brought a smile to my face, but also to that of my friend’s who can now treat her young man to dishes that are specially tailor made for him and other little people of his ilk.

And I’m letting you all into the dope on the eateries across the city who tell us that they not only welcome our progeny with open arms, but are also willing to put up with their finicky eating habits via their very own children’s menus and specially customized dishes…

Sancho’s
This fun Mexican restaurant has always tried to push the foodie envelope a little further than the rest of the lot. Not only do they very kindly pay heed to requests for off-the-menu dishes for us adults like their scrumptious steamed Tamales for instance, but they have also put in place a special kid’s menu. This colourful, paint-on-me menu card is peppered with child-friendly dishes like Nachitos slathered on with cheese sauce and mild pico de gallo and the eternal kiddie favourite—Chicken Fingers served with a mild mango salsa among other kid pleasers.

Mamagoto, Ghatkopar
Housed in the kid-friendly wonderland of the R City Mall, this Pan Asian restaurant has recently introduced their Kid’s Menu that is not just made up of a few handful kiddie dishes, but an entire five section plethora of dishes to choose from. From small bites like the mini Vegetable Shanghai Spring Rolls and tiny bowls of Sweet Corn Chicken Soup to the robata grill section with Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce, this menu truly runneth over.

Le Café
While they may not have an entire kid’s menu in place yet, what they are offering as of now to placate those fussy little eaters’ demands is the very cute Chocolate Marshmallow Pizza for Kids. This sweet pizza is a mélange of the gooey indulgence of marshmallows and the chocolate-y wonder of a pizza all topped with colourful chocolate buttons and sprinkles. Caution: this one comes with an ensuing sugar rush, so beware!
Where: Jewel of Chembur, 1st Road, Near Natraj Cinema, Chembur (east)

All Stir Fry
Again, not a dedicated kid’s menu, but at least they are pushing themselves in the right direction with the Kid’s Wok concept. At All Stir Fry kids can have their noodles with their choice of vegetable, meat and/or seafood. This wok meal is prepared keeping in mind their demanding tastebuds and making the dish even healthier, the chefs use more veggies and keep the spicy sauces to a minimum. Also, the kiddies are served their wok meals in special bowls—green for veg and red for non-veg.
Where: Ground Floor, The Gordon House Hotel, Colaba
