If you’re one of those people who can’t do without tadka in your food, then you’ll really enjoy the Indian-Chinese fair served at China Pavillion. This new restaurant, located in D.N.Nagar (Andheri West) serves up tried-and-tested Indian favourites like Kung-Pao Chicken, Crispy Spinach Chicken, Hunan Fish, Spring Rolls, Cream Corn and more. Deciphering their menu is really easy, ‘cause these are all names and flavours we are familiar with.

They do serve some signature creations, like the Dragon Pom Pom, spicy red potato dumplings, which are quite delicious. If you like something light, opt for the lettuce wraps, which you can assemble yourself with steamed veggies, crispy noodles and a sauce of your choice.

They even make Chinese sizzlers; a main gravy preparation, served with steamed veggies, French fries, rice and sauce on the side. The sizzler makes for one giant meal, so get ready to eat till you burst! The generous portion size isn’t restricted to the sizzlers alone – everything they serve is super-sized. This makes China Pavillion a great dining option for large groups of people.

What’s hot? What really stood out for me was the fact that all the vegetables were crunchy and had retained their colour! Most Chinese joints tend to cook veggies till their dead, brown & entirely unappetizing, so this came as a pleasant surprise. You can tell that care has gone into the prepping & choosing of ingredients. What’s not? The ambience is kind of odd; and almost every nook and corner is decorated with china-town souvenirs. There’s an attempt at making the place look high-end, which quite frankly falls flat.

Why you should visit - The very reasonable rates that allow you to eat a solid meal for under Rs.400 per head. In today’s expensive times, that’s an absolute steal! The unlimited lunch buffet for Rs.299, gives you a slightly upscale version of the sort of Chinese food served at birthday parties of the 90’s– haka noodles, fried rice, sweet’n’sour soup, a vegetarian or chicken gravy and good ol’ fried honey noodles with ice cream. When you should visit- When you’re in the mood for a cheap good meal that won’t burn a hole in your pocket. I see myself ordering from China Pavillion when I have an unexpected bunch of hungry guests over for dinner & can’t be bothered to cook. China Pavillion is quite clear that they intend serving good portions of carefully prepared food at a competitive rate. They make no lofty claim of cooking Chinese food like the Chinese do. They know quite well that nothing eases a spice craving quite like fiery red chicken lollypops, done the Indian Chinese way. And I’m sure lots of you are drooling just thinking of those!
