You may not need to wear one to work every day, but men, if you want to elicit a few drools from the ladies then it may be a good idea to invest in a sharp, well-cut suit. Now don’t take the easy way out and buy one off the rack! There’s nothing more unattractive than an ill-fitting blazer with puffy shoulder pads. I speak for all women when I say, we don’t like our man to look like a box. So please do us a favour and get yourself a fitted custom-made suit. Here’s a list of tailors you could go to. (Hat tip to MumbaMag reader Nitin Moily for asking a question that led to this post.)

Yaseen’s

The men of the Ansari family, who are now considered luxury tailors, have been stitching men’s wear for a couple of generations, before which they were weavers. An understanding of textile and fabrics is hereditary. In the 80’s when ready-made suits flooded the Indian market, many tailors lost work and were forced to find other means of survival. But the Ansari’s retained their clientele; after being used to a perfect customized fit their faithful customers weren’t ready to settle for the readymade stuff, even if it meant spending a little more.

The tailors at Yaseen’s are known for establishing and maintaining long-term relationships with their clients, taking time to understand their needs and creating some top-notch suits. It is rumoured that their master-ji has been doing this for so long that he can guess the measurements of a client, and using the measuring tape is merely a formality!

Just like Yaseen’s, Katchins is a family run business. At the moment, they have two branches in Mumbai, one in Chennai and one in Hyderabad. The Bandra branch is currently the biggest, but the oldest branch at Wodehouse Road in Colaba is also still operational. Their stores now have a swanky contemporary façade, but at the root of it, the owners are still humble craftsmen, fiercely proud of their skill.

They sell the material in-house, so you the entire suit-making process is pretty convenient. You choose from a wide variety of Indian and imported fabrics; they have everything from Irish linens to superfine wools. They have a very unique way of taking measurements, what they call a “try-on” method. This allows them an extreme precise assessment of your size and reduces the number of trials and alterations needed. Not many tailors in India use this method. So if you want a suit that’s like a second skin, Katchins in your best bet.

Genius Tailors

Since tailoring in India is somewhat of a family business it has also stayed within certain communities. The Bohri Mohalla and Bhendi Bazaar near Byculla, for example is home to some many of Bombay’s old tailors. Genius Tailors is one of them. From his small store, Mr.Azhar sells both ready-mades and customized men’s clothing. His most popular items are trousers and suits.

Golden Boutique
Opposite Colaba Police Station, Colaba Causeway +91 22 2202 8327/+91 22 5622 3388

I feel like Colaba Causeway is a great representation of the diversity that Mumbai has to offer. You can find everything from vintage sunglasses to puja paraphernalia on this one long street; not surprising that you can also get a suit stitched here, at Golden Boutique. While most other suit tailors are men, the suits here are made by seamstresses. They also make ladies’ business suits, and you can get as creative as you want with your designs. You can even bring them a picture from French Vogue and they’ll make you a replica. What makes them even more popular among Mumbaikars, who are always in a hurry, is that they have a 24hour delivery service on certain designs.

Now that you know how to do it, suit up and do Barney proud! Know of other places we missed out? Tell us by commenting below or email us at [email protected]

SS HOMME is way above this lot. I know they’re technically menswear designers, but their suits are next level in comparison.

Check their website on http://www.sshomme.in – they work by appointment, and it longer period, but they’re definitely worth it!
