While acknowledging the prima facie obvious fact that there never is a dearth of good pizzerias in the city, I must say that a new pizzeria invading the space of the already established players always tickles me pink. The very fact that the newbies think that they have what it takes to sustain themselves and come out trumps in the ‘pizza war’ that we are seeing played out on an almost weekly basis is ultra exciting. So when Andheri West recently saw not one, but two new entrants take their spots in the battle royal, I couldn’t just sit back and see the drama unfold without checking them both out myself. Here’s when I get into the thick of things and bring you my report card on the two…

Debonairs Pizza
As South Africa’s largest pizza chain, Debonairs Pizza makes inroads into India with this, its first ever desi branch on the unofficial khau galli of Andheri—the Juhu-Versova Link Road. The tiny, minimalistic outlet, kitted out in black and white dishes out a mindboggling variety of pizzas that are as diverse in toppings as they are in shapes. Speaking of which, do try the Filla Double Decker Pizza that is available with both veg and non-veg toppings like cream cheese, paneer, mushrooms, chicken etc. Also interesting is the Triple Decker Pizza that takes decadence to a whole new level!

Another must try is the ‘Super Pizza’ offering that has something in store for the entire family, with four differently flavoured nine inch square pizzas in one box. But for those who crave a little Indianised action, they also have several options like the Chicken/Paneer Makhani Pizzas, the Cheese and Chutney Pop-Itz that are like a cross between a pizza puff and a cup cake. And like most other pizza places they also offer three crusts (all made in-house) to choose from, namely the original, thin & crispy and the stack base.
Price Range: Rs 75-725
Delivery Zone: Within a 2 km radius from the store
Where: Shubham Co-op Housing Society Ltd, Government Layout No.5, Juhu-Versova Link Road, Andheri (West).

Kkrust
With a name beginning with a double ‘K’, this one held great promise of me tucking into a super thin crust pizza that gets me salivating, as I much prefer the New York style thin crust pizzas to the Chicago deep dish ‘meals’ (I refuse to call them pizzas)! But sadly this is one aspect that is totally missing at Kkrust. They resolutely refuse to do a thin crust version, offering instead a medium crust base which is strictly OK.

But that aside, the pizzas here are worth writing about and deserve some undivided attention bestowed on them. Take for example the super decadent Smoked Salmon Pizza with capers and preserved lemon that I loved along with the Mushroom Trifolati Pizza that has black, oyster and button mushrooms tossed in olive oil on a mozzarella-feta cheese base. Yummy! Among the Indianised varieties, the Chicken Tikka Masala Pizza had a nice smoky taste, while the veggie Achari Paneer Pizza wowed even me a staunch carnivore. And since this was a home delivered order, mine came with a few tiny and rather cute bottles of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Nice touch, that.
Price Range: Rs 95-600
Delivery Zone: Juhu, Andheri (W) and Jogeshwari
Where: Shop no 7 & 8, Ground Floor, Bhavesha CHS, Opposite Andheri Sports Complex, Veera Desai Road, Andheri (West).
