It was a sunny Sunday afternoon as we – a friend and I – made our way to Bandra’s UnionParkarea that is home to Shatranj Napoli – that Italian fine dining restaurant that reopens in three new avatars close to a year after it closed down.

Payal and Ashok Datwani were gracious hosts as they welcomed guests in and showed them around the spacious interiors – just a little over 4,000 sq ft in all. In its new avatar, or avatars, Shatranj Napoli is split into three distinct service areas: Polpo Café and Bar, Shatranj Napoli fine-dine and Polpo Up – The Gatherings.

Spread over 1,200 sq ft the all day Polpo Café and Bar promises to be the new place for Bandra’s cool crowd to let its hair down. Serving salads, sandwiches and smoothies through the day, the Café will gradually transform into a tapas bar by the evening. The finger food and cocktails we sampled definitely hit the mark though the Sangria was a bit of a let down. For those who love to idle away their time, Polpo will soon offer wi-fi too.

Shatranj fine-dine, all 1,400 sq ft of it promises to give patrons a taste of their Italian and Continental classics with new additions to the menu as well. The mushroom risotto found favour with all as did the gnocchi and pastas. From the desserts we sampled, the Bailey’s surprise – served in an edible chocolate cup – was the standout item. Shatranj’s classic Tiramisu makes a delectable comeback!

While we’d love to make this more of a food review, it’d be only fair to say that a launch brunch is not quite the way to review food. However, from what we sampled, let’s just say that Olive next door finally has some serious competition! We’re definitely going back for more.
