The 4th edition of the Kabir Festival is all set to mesmerize Mumbai with the timeless, universal message of Kabir and other Sufi and Bhakti saints of India rendered enchantingly through mystic songs, story telling, classical dances, lectures and films. The festival includes Classical, Folk, Rock-reggae and Gospel music that will appeal to one and all. With 26 events spread over 18 venues, this wholly volunteer driven festival spans the length and breadth of the city, from Colaba to Bandra, Juhu, Borivali to Vashi and Thane. All events are FREE and open to public. Featured Artists: Padmashri Prahlad Singh Tipaniya (Renowned Kabir singer of the Malwi folk tradition) Mooralala Marwada (Kabir singer of the Kutch folk tradition) Bhanwri Devi (Rustic folk singer from Churu, Rajasthan presenting Kabir & Meerabai’s poetry) Parvathy Baul and Lakshman Das Baul (Celebrated Baul singers from West Bengal) Ankit Chadha (Story Teller, Dastango presenting a narrative on Hazrat Amir Khusro) Along with Bindhu Malini & Vedanth Bharadwaj (Carnatic & Hindustani Classical vocalists) Rama Vaidyanathan (Distinguished Bharatanatyam exponent presenting women saints’ poetry) Sanjukta Wagh (Kathak dance recital showcasing the works of the Warkari poets, Maharashtra) Sonam Kalra & the Sufi Gospel Project (Confluence of all voices of faith through music & spoken word) Devnarayan Saroliya & The Tipaniya Boys (Next gen folk singers from Malwa) Shabnam Virmani (Film-maker & Kabir singer) with Vipul Rikhi (singer) The Flameshot Fakirs (Neeraj Arya’s Kabir Café presents Kabir poetry in rock & reggae style) The Festival will also host a variety of film screenings on regional Sufi and Bhakti traditions, the poets and their singers. These include the films of Shabnam Virmani, Bangladeshi filmmaker Tanvir Mokammel, M.K. Raina, Yousuf Saeed & Iffat Fatima, Anjali Monteiro & K.P. Jayasankar. Dr. Sunil Sharma, Chair, Deptartment. of Modern Languages & Comparative Literature, Boston University, USA will lecture on worldly and spiritual wisdom in the poetry of Amir Khusro. Organised by the ever growing Kabir Community in Mumbai, under the auspices of the Sahej Foundation, a public charitable trust, the Kabir Festival is truly a labour of love that is materialized on a shoe-string budget and the Community’s endless generosity volunteering time, expertise, capacity and facilities liberally.
