Fashion Fail: Lessons From 2013 Bollywood Award Show Fashion Faux Pas

I love Bollywood award season. Not to be mistaken with the real award ceremony. No, my journey ends with the red carpet. I have no patience to sit through the horridness called Bollywood award shows. The only thing I do watch is the red carpet arrival. It is after all that one place we really get to see who is a fashion maverick and who has topped the list of fashion fail. More importantly, it is from here we learn some of fashion’s best lessons.

In this blog post I will not only enlighten you about 2013 Bollywood award season’s biggest fashion fails, but also show you what we the common people can learn from these celebrity fashion faux pas.

Sonakshi Sinha

Over-Bling, is a No- No Thing!
Holy mother of God! For a little longer than a moment there I thought it was an overfed ostrich in a zardozi jacket! Thank God, it was only everyone’s favorite full figured gal, Sonakshi Sinha. The first question that comes to mind when I saw this look: “What was sweet Sonakshi’s thinking when she decided to don this bedazzled, over-the-top Falguni and Shane Peacock dress?”

I mean, if her aim was to look like a female clone of Michael Jackson, let me just say mission accomplished, woman. There is no other reason what so ever for her to wear so much gold bling and black together in one place. A word of wise, bling is in, but over-bling is a complete fashion kill.

Parineeti Chopra

Dress Your Age; don’t let the Dress Age You!
Are you lost, Parineeti? Did your driver drop you at the wrong venue? Clearly you are dressed for what would be a Little Bo Peep pageant, correct? FYI, for that too you are not the best dressed! Seriously, no one in their right mind or style would be caught dead; much less wear what you did to the 19th Annual Colors Screen Awards.

Of all the dresses, sarees and outfits created by Sabyasachi Mukherjee, she walks in wearing the most matronly one. Other than adding some 10+ years to your current age, this maxi dress does nothing for you. On top of that, the bow adds more bulk where it is not needed. And last but not the least, it makes you look saggy in places where you should not! Sweetie, there are many ways to do boho-chic, this gypsy-esque dress is so not the way.

Malaika Arora Khan

Classic Gone Wrong
We know monochrome (black and white) is the IT trend. We also know Malaika Arora Khan is a fashion maven. So, it is basically a universally acknowledged and accepted fact that Malaika in a monochrome ensemble could be nothing short of fashion magic! And yet, when Malaika walked on the Zee Cine Awards red carpet wearing a white pearl-embellished ballerina dress by Alice + Olivia paired with black sandals and clutch, the look was a pure insult to the monochrome trend.

For starters the dress was perfect for prom or swan lake audition, not for a presenter of an award function. Knowing Malaika, one had hope that she could have managed to make this dress work, had it not been for the accompanying black clutch and sandals. The black accessorizing elements neither complemented nor contrasted but simply crushed the entire look. They say you can never go wrong with black and white. And here stands Malaika a clear example on how wrong you can go with it. Moral of the story: In an effort to being fashion forward one must never ever forget the fashion basics.

Mugdha Godse

The Ugly Side of Fashion
If you listen carefully, the dress worn by Mugdha Godse to the ZEE Cine Awards can be heard whispering, “I am butt ugly why would you want to wear me!” Dresses like these make me realize that not all Bollywood divas have the potential to reach fashion nirvana. I don’t know where to start. What was it about this dress that I hated the most? Was it the garland style flowers hanging of one side? Or was it the non-flattering bulk giving halter neck cowls? The fact that someone actually thought it wearable is what offends me the most!

Whatever the reason maybe, it’s dresses like these which give fashion a tacky name. Honestly, it is a very good thing I don’t know who designed this eyesore of a piece, because I am seriously tempted in declaring a fashion fatwa on him or her. And Ms Godse, lets call this look your yellow card.

Amrita Rao

When Your Mixes don’t Match
This look is a classic case of beautiful disaster. Each piece of garment is uniquely wearable; if not beautiful, in its own way, but when put together looks like a hot mess. Case and point Amrita Rao in Alkesh Ramwani at Filmfare Awards 2013. The velvet jacket with the sci-fi shoulders has semi-rock star potential. The virgin white dress with a rose centerpiece is apt for a fashionably challenged bride. But when paired together, the end result looks like a lazy child playing dress-up.

I mean, Amrita, for someone who really is not visible on the Bollywood radar do you want to be remembered solely for this colossal mistake of a look? The only saving grace is most people don’t remember you to remember this outfit. Next time, have a professional stylist help you dress up instead of your neighborhood children.

Deepika Padukone

Right Dress, Wrong Event
Deepika Padukone in an all black peek-a-boo, sheer Prabal Gurung dress at the Filmfare awards is hands down my least favorite look of 2013 award season. I could not understand why everyone was head-over-heels in love with the look! First, I thought I was the only one to not go gaga over it. So, to get my doubts sorted, I turned to the one place I turn to in times of crisis: Twitter. After tweeting around for a while I realized a large percent of fashionable people were seriously disappointed with this look as well. Don’t get me wrong, I do not hate the dress nor do I hate Deepika’s styling of it. And yet this look end up on my fashion fail list?

Well, now I will tell you why this is my least favorite look of the award season. If the Filmfare awards are our version of the Oscars, why would you show up in a dress that has Grammy written all over it. Even the queen of Goth chic, Rooney Mara would never wear something so dominatrix-ish to the biggest award show. In simple terms, this look is a classic case of a right dress, wrong event. And there is no bigger faux pas than that. The sad part is, Deepika was on such hot style streak with her earlier award show looks that one could not help but expect something spectacular. And spectacular it was, in the disappointing department.

Whether you agree with my selection or not, you can’t deny the fact that each and every one of them did go wrong in a certain way due to which they have been labeled as 2013 Bollywood award season’s fashion fail. Check out our post the hottest colours of the season for some real style!
