The Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla duo has featured on the Indian Fashion canvas for the past 25 years and is known for designs which epitomize classic elegance. Believers of old wine in a new bottle philosophy, Abu-Sandeep give ancient techniques and craftsmanship a new touch – Chikankari, Zardosi, Tharad, Mirrorwork et al. Finest fabrics, divine hand-embroidery and delicate embellishments give their collections – for both men and women – an aesthetic appeal like no other. Rohit Bal started with traditional wear for men in 1990 and since then there has been no looking back. This designer is known for working with almost every type of fabric – yes even the traditional khadi! Generally, Rohit Bal collections would feature pastel and earthy tones and lots of lotus and peacock motifs. Though his flagship retail space – Lotus – is based out of Delhi, the designer also has a store in Mumbai. Store Location: Colaba

Manish Malhotra! What makes this name stand out in the fashion designer clan is that it has its humble beginnings rooted in one of the world’s largest and most popular film industries, Bollywood. It is here that Malhotra started his career in 1990 as a costume designer. He has over 1000 films under his belt and has draped some of the most elegant actors like Shabana Azmi, Sridevi, Shilpa Shetty, Karishma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra to name a few. His label has been instrumental in empowering many rural women and employing them as craftsmen and supports the Mijwan Welfare Society. Store Location: Linking Road, Khar

Remember the regal costumes in Devdas and Jodha Akbar and the raw and bold designs in Chandni and Taal – that my dear readers,  is Neeta Lulla for you! A name at the vanguard of India’s fashion industry for over two decades now, Neeta has worked on over 350 films in Bollywood and also has the famous Rai-Bachhan wedding in her portfolio! Store Location: Santacruz West

Satya Paul, the designer launched the label Satya Paul in 1985. The brand has a range of product lines including sarees, bridal wear & lehengas plus ready-to-wear. Reportedly the first designer label in India to brand sarees with designer’s logo and to exhibit their collection in the format of fashion shows, the brand is known for its bold prints and selection of strong colours. Just four months after graduating from National Institute of Fashion Technology, Sabyasachi Mukherjee launched his own label, Sabyasachi. He describes his collections as an ‘international styling with an Indian soul’ and plays with unusual fabrics, texturing and detailing, fusion of styles, and patch-work with embellishments in vibrant colors. His unique contribution is the use of indigenous methods like bandhani, gotawork, block printing, hand dyeing and other such craftsmanship in the construction of modern silhouettes. She is the founder of Milaaya Embroideries which caters to a range of global couture houses like Christian Dior, Escada and Armani and also has a flagship store – Gayatri which offers the designer’s luxury line of clothes. Gayatri Khanna’s store boasts of a well-known clientele of the likes of Aishwarya Rai Bachhan, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu and  Dia Mirza. Store Location: Bandra

Popularly known as the ‘Queen of Drapes’ designer Shaina NC is most known for her 55 innovative ways of draping a saree. She is also featured in the Guinness Book of World Records for draping a saree in the fastest time. Store Locations: Juhu, Fort

Arjun Khanna is a name that has revolutionised men’s fashion in India. The last 20 years have witnessed Arjun’s pioneering contribution to men’s fashion – intricate detailing, impeccable tailoring, and rich and opulent designs. Arjun’s clientele spans actors like Ranbir Kapoor, top industrialists like Anand Mahindra, sports persons like Sachin Tendulkar and other public figures like renowned tabla player Zakhir Hussain.
