A fashionably challenged friend from the marketing world called one day asking the most unexpected question: “What are the latest fashion trends?” Just as my jaw was about to hit the ground she said it is for a new fashion brand she is working on. The criteria of the research being these trends have to be worn by and seen on the ‘common woman/man’. A trend that made a splash on the runways and red carpet but also found a place in the wardrobe of the ‘Aam Adami’. This got me thinking, what is Mumbai wearing? Not the starry people, but the regular ‘janta’ who are busy catching a train, negotiating with a cab driver or waiting endless hours in a Big Bazaar checkout line, what are they wearing? And who better to answer my questions that some of Mumbai most stylish people. These ladies are not some high-fi fashion editor or big name star stylist with an unlimited supply of designer goodies. These are everyday women and girls just like you and me who attend office and college and somewhere between shopping for shampoo and ‘sabzi’ they find time to show off their fashion and styling skills. Better known as fashion bloggers these ladies are the quintessential ‘Aam Adami of fashion’. Make a Statement! Nothing says all eyes on me quite like a bold statement print. While some may love the attention, a lot more will run away from it. How then, does one style an eye-popping dramatic trend without making a major fashion faux pas? Wearing a statement print can be quite a tricky style move but that does not mean one cannot wear it. When Ritcha from ‘Ri(t)ch Styles’ donned on a Quirk Box’s ‘Toy Factory Dolls Boyfriend’ print jacket at a recent event, people literally stopped her to compliment her bold choice. Even the star of the event, actor Imran Khan, could not help but compliment her! Shades Of Neon! While ‘50 Shades Of Grey’ is on most women’s must read list, shades of neon are slowly making their way into their wardrobes. This is one trend that has been embraced wholeheartedly by a select few, while the others are still tad bit neon shy. And for those who think that a head-to-toe neon look is not their cup of tea; rest assured, there is always more than one way to add these bright colour pops to your ensemble. Borrowing a page form one the most stylish preschool teacher I have ever met, Dipna of ‘Love The World Today’ shows us how accessorizing with shades of neon can spice up the simplest of outfits. The luxury of neon accessorizing is that one does not really have to step out of their style comfort zone to experiment with this trend. Self Made For years we have seen labels caring the tag ‘Made in….’. But, this new trend is replacing the name of the country to the name of its creator. DIY a.k.a ‘Do-It -Yourself’ is a fast growing trend among fashion and craft lovers. It is quite similar to how our mothers would take a famous chef’s recipe and try it in her own way, expect the main ingredient is not food but clothes, shoes, jewelllery, bag, ect. And while a lot of people may experiment with it only a select few can make a DIY piece look like a designer one. When Gargi of CandyVioleta wanted to try out the cutout trend, she decided to literally take matters in her own had and create this oh so cute cutout shirt for herself. Not only is DIY one of the best way to show-off your creative skills but also a budget friendly way to transform old and boring pieces into new and trendy ones. Repeating in Style There is lot to learn form Kate Middleton, but the one lesson she taught the fashion world well is, how to wear the same outfit without looking like a copy-paste version of yourself. While Kate may have an army of stylists to help her out, we have our own style instincts to rely on. And while many people find repeating an outfit an uninspiring task, Dayle from Style File on the other hand totally enjoys restyling a classic LWD into stylishly different look. She confidently wears the same flirty LWD to the office, to a brunch and a night out. One does not need to be fashion extraordinaire to pull this trend off, all you need is some smart styling moves and you too can wear the same outfit in different avatars.
