One of my most soul-scarring memories is of me being yelled at by a holier-than-thou French chef-cum-instructor at a snooty cookery studio in Paris’ tres fashionable Marais district. My ‘guilty sin’ was an innocent suggestion of substituting a ‘coronary artery disease-inducing’ pint of full-fat milk in a crème brûlée with a more diet-friendly skimmed version. “But it’s healthy!” I quipped. “Silence!!” was the reply I got from the kitchen terror, served with a generous helping of scorn. It was then that I learnt that one must never argue with a French chef or risk facing instant public chastising!

But that day, I was also introduced to the wonderful concept of a cookery studio. A cooking laboratory that is fully kitted out with the latest in cooking equipment, implements and ingredients making it a veritable sanctum sanctorum for food worshippers like moi.

My constant whine since then has been about the lack of such places back home. But over the last few months, Mumbai has seen two such cookery studios open their doors. Places where you can have all your food fantasies catered too… and one of them even teaches you how to have a go at it yourself.

Eat Drink Design (EDD)
The concept of Eat Drink Design is simple. It is a culinary studio that promises to convert a simple desire of celebration into a whole new experience. They specialize in catering food that provides a combination of new flavours and textural variances, through interpretation and elements of fun, surprise and delight. Eat Drink Design calls itself a ‘pioneer in marrying design to food’. And they also claim to be among the first to experiment and apply molecular gastronomy to their dishes. It’s a one-stop solution that puts together all elements of festivity– decor, cuisine, drinks, service, cakes and gifts. They personalize multi-cuisine menus for every occasion that showcase uniqueness in the look, service, style and cuisine reflecting the personality and purpose of the host. Hmm, I sure know who’s going to cater to my next soirée…
