Now, this is one of those rarest of rare phenomenon that is quite akin to seeing snowfall here in balmy Mumbai. Me, trawling through the shelves of an organic food store (…err, actually make that two!) is enough to shock the living daylights out of any body who knows me well enough to vouch for my rather unhealthy eating habits that I conveniently and passionately blame on my job as a food writer and restaurant reviewer.

But last weekend, as it so happened, I found myself agreeing to play host and chef for the farewell dinner party of a friend who is tragically ‘afflicted’ by the trifecta of being lactose intolerant, gluten allergic and peanut allergic as well. Oh, and to add insult to injury, she’s heartbreakingly herbivorous to boot!

So, after hours of meticulous research to come up with the ultimate vegetarian, dairy-free and gluten-peanut-devoid menu, I was all set. Armed with a shopping list of intriguing ingredients like amaranth crackers for the hors d’oeuvre, wheat grass for the shots, quinoa for the risotto and gluten-free Rice Milk for the non-dairy ice-cream, I was on a roll. Now the question before my wide eyes was, “where on earth am I supposed to find all these things?”

Sure that my neighbourhood kirana wala would look at me like I was some sort of nutter, the minute I uttered the word “quinoa”, I didn’t even want to take a chance by trying my luck with him. But serendipity had something entirely wonderful in store for me, as I chanced upon these two radically different organic stores a stone’s throw away from each other in South Mumbai. Both these stores subscribe to the ‘organic is good for you’ philosophy that I’ve come to appreciate thanks to them.

Organic Haus, Altamount Road
Kitted out to resemble a minimalistcally designed health clinic as opposed to a mere grocery store, Organic Haus is as chic as it can get with its soothing pastel hues and vibrant bursts of green. But more than the classy décor, it is the organic products that they retail that does a whole lot of the talking… as it should do!

Stocking everything from freshly-baked gluten free bread to amaranth crackers to soya nuggets and all sorts of organic condiments, chocolates and snacks, this store has it all and then some more. I even managed to pick up a whole range of herbal soft drinks and post-dinner tea infusions that my friends still cant stop talking about. What’s better is that they home deliver to anywhere in Mumbai. But I’d suggest a saunter down to the store every now and then to truly get a feel of the ‘organic’ side of life.

This one exudes a more holistic, herbal kind of vibe with its shelves packed with wondrous smelling potions and spices. It even has an entire section dedicated to healthy snacking with yummy organic, gluten free khakras, soya chaklis and baked rice puffs that are flavoured with interesting stuff like coriander-lime masala or the absolutely innovative garlic-thyme powder.

I picked up two bags of quinoa and a carton of soya milk as well as a bottle of organic acacia honey to sweeten the ice-cream. For my spinach-pomegranate-tofu salad I was spoilt as far as dressings went as The Health Shop had a huge variety like honey-mustard and dairy free ranch. Since I had also decided to make granola cookies to go with tea, I made sure I bought enough pre-mixed muesli that had oats, raisins and sans any kind of nuts. The helpful staff even gave me tips on how exactly to cook the quinoa to a perfect al dente consistency as quinoa is at its best when a tad under cooked.

PS. My organic dinner party was a sleeper hit and I can safely say that no meat eaters were harmed during the course of the dinner.
