Do you plan on making a meal of that ice-cream!?” Every summer, since I can remember, my mum has always issued that standard line to me without fail whenever she sees me wolfing down a vat-sized bowl full of tender coconut ice-cream or a German beer mug brimming with mango sorbet to which a splash of kiwi syrup is added. But that’s how my relationship with this staple of summer is. I am un-flinchingly addicted to ice-creams and their frozen siblings be they slushies, softies, kulfis, gelatos, frozen yogurt or those wonderful at-the-bottom-of-the-frozen-dessert-heap, ice lollies that also go by the very bizarre (and typically Mumbaiyya) name of ‘pepsis’ once they are comfortably ensconced in a plastic tube.

‘The bigger the better’ is my credo when it comes to ice-creams and if that means elevating the orgasmic frozen wonders to the status of meals, then so be it! But I’m not alone in my predilection to turn an ice-cream into a meal as you will soon see from the following specimens that eschew the standard cup and cone for some true blue drama of the frozen kind…

Plated ice-cream dishes by Häagen-Dazs
Now, these guys have always had the word ‘unique’ at the vortex of their raison d’être. Starting with the name ‘Häagen-Dazs’ that means nothing and is a made up duo of surnames unrelated to the actual owners. Secondly, their ice-cream flavours have always bordered on the über unusual with offerings like Noni Fruit and Gaurana. Heard of them? Well, neither have I! They are loath to call their outlets something as philistine as ‘ice-cream parlours’ and prefer the more stylish ‘dessert lounge’ (whatever that is!). But now here’s where things get a wee bit more exciting for us in Mumbai.

This summer they have launched conceptual plated ice-cream dishes much on the lines of a gourmet meal. To begin with, the Vanilla Waffle Delight is composed of vanilla ice-cream and is served in a waffle cup along with silky white chocolate and dressed with generous portions of warm caramel sauce. The Fruit Fusion is a perfect blend of Häagen-Dazs ice-creams and fresh fruits topped with whipped cream and honey.

Nutty Sunshine

For chocolate lovers, the decadent Chocolate Crew is a must try. A perfect amalgamation of chocolate ice-cream in a white chocolate-dipped waffle cup huddled with a brownie and a sinful chocolate cupcake. The irresistible Caramelised Bliss brings together caramel biscuit ice-cream reserved in a crunchy waffle that is paired with luscious pancakes.

Macadamia nut ice cream in a light waffle cup with white chocolate, served alongside butter-browned crepes and thick caramel sauce topped with fresh bananas makes up the Nutty Sunshine. That’s not all; you can also savour the Creamy Surprise, a tantalizing combination of Pralines and Cream ice-cream and fresh fruits loaded inside paper-thin crepes and garnished with a drizzle of floral honey.

Pizookie
Pizookie

The Pizookie by Polpo Café and Bar
The iconic, 23-year-old Shatranj Napoli has recently gotten a much-needed facelift and emerges in its new avatar along with Polpo—a breezy 1,200 sq ft café and bar that offers a veritable slice of all things Italiano. And for once in a very long time, the desserts here aren’t given any step-motherly treatment. Trust me when I say this; that even two grown men with voracious appetites (for food that is!) can barely do justice to their behemoth of an ice-cream creation. Yes, the Pizookie served at Polpo Café and Bar is a monstrous piece of a hot out of the oven, rich and delicious cookie topped with three large scoops of vanilla bean ice cream and served in its own deep dish anointed with a choice of chocolate chunk, white chocolate macadamia nut, peanut butter or oatmeal raisin walnut crumbles and caramel sauce. With a meal like this, who needs dessert?

K. Rustom's Ice Cream Sandwich
K. Rustom’s Ice Cream Sandwich

The ice-cream sandwich by K. Rustom
The service here might be brusque, often bordering on rude, but then who cares for such accoutrements when the offerings are so darn good… and reasonable to boot! Yes, K. Rustom is an institution when it comes to good, wholesome ice-cream in a mind-boggling variety of flavours ranging from jamun to ginger-lemon and from papaya to sour cherry. All these made with full fat milk, real fruit pulp with pieces of fruit poking out of the rectangular slabs of pure heaven. The ice-cream sandwich here is made up of two thin wafer biscuit pieces that cuddle a slab of ice-cream of your choice. And if you ask nicely, it will be ‘sauced’ with some molten chocolate lava or some cool strawberry crush.
Price: Rs 50
Where: K. Rustom, 87 Stadium House, Veer Nariman Road, Opposite Ambassador Hotel, Churchgate
