If there is one good deed the world cannot have enough of right now, it is ‘going green’. In every little way possible, we need to make this planet a greener place to make it a happier place. It really is simple and I have a couple of ideas to share. From gifting beautiful, live plants to growing your own veggies in Mumbai apartments, let’s resolve to take one small step in the green direction. These two new services launched in the city will come in handy. You may also want to check out my earlier post on how easy it is to take up urban farming in Mumbai.

If instead of giving a loved one flowers, you gave them a potted plant, your gift would be long lasting, alive and much more meaningful. Just like me, the people at Passion Green are convinced that potted plants make the most perfect gifts. It was with this belief that they started ‘Gift a Plant’ service. Passion Green is a company founded by Alka Bajoria and Rajiv Rawal; both have green thumbs and Alka is also an amateur potter. They combined their love for plants and pottery to give ‘going green’ new meaning. They create green art which can be made a part of your home décor. Passion Green also undertakes indoor and outdoor (terrace, sundeck, balcony) landscaping, but I find their Gift a Plant portal is by far their most interesting service.

The portal is easy to use and has a great variety of options. You can choose between Bonsais, indoor plants, flowering plants, health plants and more. If you have a friend who has never maintained plants before you can gift them plants from the ‘low upkeep’ section. They even have options listed by occasion, like house warming, anniversary, etc. The choice of flower pots and planters is as wide and interesting as the plants themselves. Plus, there’s something for every budget, and they deliver to almost all of western and central Mumbai.

If you’re looking for something more functional, then perhaps an organic kitchen garden will spark your interest.  Wouldn’t it be nice to lean out of your window and pick out some fresh home-grown basil to garnish a bowl of pasta? Maitri Mehta will tell you that even a small window sill, balcony and terrace is enough to grow a few herbs, vegetables and fruits, which you can use in everyday cooking.

Maitri has maintained an organic kitchen garden on her own terrace for a while now, and has begun sharing her knowledge on urban farming with interested clients in Pune and Mumbai. She’ll help you pick the plants you should grow, depending on your nutrition needs and dietary preferences. Then she’ll bring over some saplings to help you get started. What you can grow will depend on where you live, the amount of sunlight your home gets, wind conditions, humidity levels and of course, how much time you wish to devote to gardening. You will need to vary what you grow depending on the season, which is a great way to ensure your body gets a variety of different nutrients.

With Maitri’s help you will be able to grow simple curry leave, mint and basil, as well as some more exotic produce like galangal, citronella, oregano, stevia, miniature oranges, tarragon and much more. All the saplings she gives you are grown using 100% organic materials and are planted in earthen pots which you can place in your garden or balcony. She’ll also give you a ‘grow guide’, a manual of sorts which you can refer to for maintenance of the plant. For more info log onto her facebook page.

With these two services, ornamental potted plants and a fully functional kitchen garden are just a phone call away. You really won’t find an easier way to green up your home.
