Any trained actor will agree that it’s harder to leave an audience clutching their sides with laughter than it is to bring them to tears. Ironically what the modern urban audience needs most is a good laugh. Which is why comedy clubs and stand-up shows are slowly making their way to humor hungry Mumbai.

For the last three years a dedicated group of local jesters has been researching and refining the art of Improvisational Comedy: unrehearsed unscripted games and scenes designed to tickle your funny bone. The concept was made popular by the highly successful TV show ‘Whose Line is It Anyway’.

This group was created by Adam Dow, a former Seattle resident with close to 13 years of professional Improv experience. He was first introduced to Improvisational theater during his days in college, where he lead a group. Back in the States he worked with a professional troupe called ‘Unexpected Productions’.

When Adam first came to India no one had heard of Improvisation as a form a comedy. Seeing an opportunity to spread the gospel of funny, he started by conducting workshops, and slowly built a group that was seasoned enough to perform. This spirited bunch; ‘Improv Comedy Mumbai‘ has been performing ever since in several nightclubs and bars around Mumbai, and other Indian cities. They’re ability to serve up unscripted ‘rofl’ moments has earned them quite a fan following.

Earlier this year the group was invited to attend Impro Amsterdam 2012, an International improv festival! This was the first time the western world was introduced to Indian improvisational comedy. The act was very well received, and Improv Comedy Mumbai has been accepted quite warmly by the more experienced improvisers of world. A proud moment indeed !

The cast varies for every show, and each cast member brings with them something unique. Kaneez Surka Narwala has people in splits with her witty verses. Naveen Kaushik, a seasoned film actor brings a certain loud flamboyant baroque style. Perhaps the youngest cast member, Daylynn D’Souza’s forte is sarcasm and double entendre. While Natasha Chadha has a way with awkward physical humor. Nigel Rajarathnam is the only improviser in the country who is also a musician. Stage actor Dhruv Lohumi is also prominent members of the cast. Now making fewer appearances are Mukul Chadda and Shaun Williams.

If you want to catch them in action here is your chance! Starting 17th May, Improv Comedy Mumbai will be performing live at Lagerbay (Waterfield Road, Bandra West) every other Thursday at 9:30p.m..The show costs Rs.250 and lasts for an hour.
