You may love Mumbai or dislike it (no, no one really does) but one thing is for sure, you just can’t miss the variety it offers. Even if you claim to be a true Mumbaikar having roamed every nook and cranny of the city, you will definitely find something new each time you step out. This summer Mumbai gets its first  Jane Jacobs Walk which is organised the world over in May to honour the urban activist Jane Jacobs.

About Jane Jacobs Walk
Jane Jacobs Walk is a program by the Center for the Living City,  a nonprofit organization created by friends of Jane Jacobs, a journalist, author and an urban activist. She studied cities extensively and tried to promote the uniqueness of their neighborhoods. The walks which are organized in her honour aim to involve people from different communities in understanding their city. It is organized around the time of her birthday, May 4th. This year, a nonprofit organization in India, the Urban Design Collective will conduct the walks at Chennai, Pondicherry and Mazgaon, Mumbai.

Why Mazgaon?
Mazgaon is one of the last surviving neighborhoods of Mumbai with European remnants. It is a place where various communities like Maharashtrians, Goans, East Indian Catholics, Anglo-Indians, Khoja and Bori Muslims dwell together. This walk aims to showcase the rich cultural aspects of the area along with a commentary on its existing social structure. It will also include chronicles of Mazgaon’s forgotten past, stories of change and urban legends which still haunt the residents. The idea is to have a conversation about how the city belongs to each of us.

Walk in Mumbai
The walk will be conducted in Mumbai in second week of May. The focus is on intimate groups, mostly of 8-10 people so that each one can understand the surrounding better and it does not become bothersome for the residents. The walk is free for all but you need to register by filling a form. Though in mid-summer, walks will be conducted in morning so you need not worry about the heat. Also, for people out of Mumbai, you can organize a walk in your city once they approve your idea.

When: 12th May 2013
Where: The walk will start from Byculla Bakery, outside Byculla station, East.
Time: 7.30 am to 9.30 am
Contact: 9930803936
