While Bollywood does dominate Mumbai, or for that matter all of India, the Indie music scene is slowly picking up. Those of you who are looking to catch bands performing in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai but do not know where to go, well, look no further. We have compiled a list of venues that regularly host live music performances by local and guest bands. Fom the good old popular hubs to the upcoming ones here are the ones we noticed doing a good job; let us know if there any places we missed!

Blue Frog
Blue Frog

Blue Frog (Lower Parel)
One of the oldest and best venues for live music, Blue Frog hosts bands almost every day. All bands aspire to perform at Blue Frog, the venue where both Indian and international acts find a raving audience. Some popular names include Swarathma, Karsh Kale, Dualist Inquiry to Raghu Dixit, Mutemath and Susheela Raman. Definitely the go to venue for live action, Blue Frog is a must visit for everyone and entries are usually quite affordable.

Hard Rock Cafe (Andheri & Worli)
Hard Rock Cafe (HRC) is probably the second biggest platform for musicians in Mumbai, now with two venues—Worli and the newly opened venue in Andheri. Gigs are on Wednesdays at the Andheri and on Thursdays at the Worli venue. Besides hosting performances by bands like Shruti Pathak’s Guzzler, Ankur Tiwari and Paradigm Shift, HRC also hosts the famous Hard Rock Rising competition each year. Entries are more expensive at HRC compared to Blue Frog usually, and food is a bit on the costlier side as well, but the ambiance is quite vibrant.

The Little Door (Andheri)
Every Tuesday you can catch acoustic performances by bands and singer-songwriters at The Little Door. Usually there is one opening act followed by a one to one-and-a-half performance by the main act. Food is average, but the crowd that gathers in the inside area for bands definitely comes here for the music. And, entry is free!

Music at The Angrezi Pub

The Angrezi Pub (Belapur)
Navi Mumbai is also getting its dose of live music, finally. The Angrezi Pub has a really cool vibe, great food and now live music. Bands such as Rang and Blame the Herb have performed at this fun venue. Here’s hoping more and more live music venues open for our friends in Navi Mumbai.

D’Bell (Lower Parel)
With artists like Nush Lewis, Reggae Rajahs and Gods Robots, D’Bell is certainly starting to give other venues in town-side a run for their money. Bands have been performing regularly, but not as frequently as Blue Frog. Let’s see how things pick up here. I strongly recommend you give this place a visit, not just for live music but also for the delicious food.

The Hive (Khar)
Previously Mumbai based programmer Rishu Singh had organized gigs with plenty of bands at Kino 108 in Andheri—however, now instead of at Kino 108, you can catch acts as diverse as ADM Jazz Revival to Nikhil The’Souza at The Hive in Khar.

O15’s Cafe (Andheri & Malad)
Two very new venues have opened up in Andheri and Malad—O15’s Cafe. Every Thursday catch bands at their Andheri venue and every Friday at their Malad venue. Artists such as Samantha Edwards and Ashwin Srinivasan as well as bands such as Spud in The Box, The Chudail & Demons, Mihir Joshi Band and Kanchan Daniel Band have rocked the stages here. While the food is average, the nice thing is that entry is free!

3 Wise Monkeys (Khar)
While the venue doesn’t draw too many well-known bands and the food and service could be improved, it definitely gets packed on gig nights. Bands such as Crossfire, Snowblind and Wajood have performed at this cozy little venue.

Music at Cheval

Cheval (Bandra)
Recently Cheval has started hosting bands in their The Chevalier Sessions. Acts such as Sky Rabbit, Aazin Printer, Adam Avil and Red Seems Right have performed at Cheval, adding some spice to Bandra nightlife.

You can also catch some killer acts from time to time at The Bandstand Revival (Bandra), All Starr Jam (Vero Moda/Jack N Jones) and Live From the Console at Mehboob Studios (Bandra). There are a few more places that host live music performances, but not as regularly, including High Street Phoenix/Palladium Mall (Lower Parel) and Out of the Blue (Powai). iBar (Bandra) will soon be hosting unplugged performances on Sundays mid-March onward, as well as F!@# the Name (Malad) which will be hosting bands every alternate week. Amigos (Andheri) will be hosing live music performances post-renovation May onward.

Let us know about your experience at any of the above mentioned venues and do share your thoughts on various bands you have caught live in Mumbai.
