I live in a relatively quiet part of the city, and I often find myself being very grateful for this. There is space for me to ride my cycle on empty streets, sit on the side path for a cup of chai and even listen to the sounds of birds. As I walked in silence one day, I happened to pass a very unassuming little structure with a plaque that read ‘DEED’s Catering College for the Hearing Impaired’. It got me thinking, about how much we grumble about the levels of noise in the city, and how awful it would be to not be able to hear these very sounds. I became grateful for one more thing, that I could hear, both the sweet sound of birds and the blaring sound of Mumbai’s traffic.

Cooking up a storm!
DEEDS (Development, Education Empowerment for the Disadvantaged in Society) is an NGO that was founded in 2003. The trust believed that the problems of deaf were the most neglected in society, and hence work the hearing impaired. They make an interesting point, that being deaf is an “invisible dissability” as a deaf person cannot be picked out of a crowd. This perhaps is the reason why this section of people is neglected by care givers, social support organizations and schools for the differentially-abled.

Since I am a great lover of food, this initiative, the catering college really touched my heart. The DEEDS website proudly states that they are the “First ever catering institute for the Deaf in India”, and what’s more? Their course is certified by the Maharashtra State Board. Every year the college takes in a batch of 20 students, who are trained in culinary skills and commercial catering. By the end of the year, they are fully equipped to take on the industry and many find themselves placed as soon as they finish their course. The college takes donations which helps cover fees of those students who cannot afford to pay.

Besides the catering college, DEEDS is associated with several schools for the hearing impaired, they run a computer centre and work in many different ways for the betterment of the deaf.

Delivering Love, Miraculously!
Since we are on the subject of hearing impairment, I would like to introduce you to another beautiful project. Some of my research lead me to Mirakle Couriers, a courier service run entirely by the deaf. It’s a small organization, with a team of 44 talented male deaf courier agents, who navigate the traffic infested streets of Mumbai in silence, delivering packages to awaiting customers. They go through a carefully planned training process to equip them for the task at hand.

For the safety of the employees, they travel only using public transport! (efficient and ecofriendly). Incidently India is one of the only coutries in the world where current road conditions and traffic rules do not take into consideration the needs to the deaf. In most other countries provisions are made so that they can drive.

By marrying “professional excellence with a social cause” Mirakle Couriers has created an unusual job opportunity for the deaf. Only 67% of the hearing impaired population of India find employment. They are often ill-treated, misunderstood and unecessarily treated like they are mentally handicapped. In other cases, they are over protected and not allowed to fend for themselves.

Mirakle workers believes in challenging it’s employees, so that they can face obstacles, be confident of their skills and function independantly. I love their moto “We don’t hear. We listen.”

I agree with their way of dealing with physical dissabilities and there’s a lesson in this for us all. I urge you to support this cause, as next time you need a packaged delivered let the Mirakle Courier workers do it for you, create new jobs and reduce your carbon footprint while doing so!
