Food Bytes: Four Reasons To Visit Merwan’s Before The Curtain Falls

So, this is my very first attempt at penning an eulogy. But what’s more distressing for me is that this eulogy may not be the last. As you are seeing, the city’s legendary old world-atmosphere-creating Irani cafes are a dying breed, with the life just waiting to be snuffed out of them by owners who have simply thrown in the towel for reasons best known to them. And B Merwan & Co or simply Merwan’s to us khari biskoot dunkers is one such sitting duck. I’m sure you all have heard by now that our beloved go-to spot for some true blue Mumbai fare is downing its shutters imminently. Sad, I know.

But what we can do is to pay our final visits to this iconic eatery housed close to the Grant Road Station to soak in every last morsel of nostalgia that will soon be figments of our foodie memories. And if my emo-loaded spiel isn’t enough to convince you to head to Merwan’s, here are four reasons to make sure that you do:

1. Mawa Cake
This quintessential comfort food for the soul is a morsel of the most moist, flavourful cake made with flour, sugar, butter and pure mawa, further elevated to the status of an epic with the addition of cardamom. Best chased with a nice milky coffee, the taste of this one lingers on…

2. Aakuri with Brun
Spicy (and slightly runny) scrambled eggs laced with green chillies, tomatoes and onion, accompanied with its side kick of a crusty brun pao slathered with butter is the reasons why breakfast at Merwan’s is an institution in itself.

3. Bread Pudding
With its slightly eggy taste, this wobbly pudding is made with bread baked in-house, dunked in a milk and egg slurry and comes adorned with bits of tutti-frutti. Gourmandise it warm, cold or simply at room temperature at anytime of the day… or night!

4. Irani Chai
Sipped out of a chipped cup sitting on a weather-beaten saucer, this ultra sweet-n-sticky sum of its spiced milk, sugar and tea parts is a great way to keep that sugar rush surging all day long.

R.I.P Merwan’s. We will miss you…
