Working with tight deadlines and not being able to find time for hobbies and passions sound familiar? Of course it does, unfortunately most of us in Mumbai can relate to it.  Which is the reason that when I meet people who do manage to pull off pursuing their passions while managing a full time job, I have tremendous respect for them.

You have already read about Avantika Agarwal and her Yellow Buffalo. Another entrepreneur we met is Sreeraman Mohan Girija aka Sreeraman M.G aka MG – a graphic designer who has started his own line of T-shirts called MGEEZ. After dabbling in web design and user experience design, and doodling away in whatever little spare time he had, M G decided he wanted to print his designs on T-shirts – and thus was born MGEEZ, the online t-shirt store.

“The website started in May and the response has been great so far”, he says. But one of my first questions had to be – how does he get these creative tee print ideas to begin with? “I have been working as a graphic designer for some time now. So my mind has been tuned to look for ideas all the time. For example, the idea for the ‘Deadline Tee’ came up when a couple of my colleagues were discussing deadlines and one of the guys said the word deadline with an emphasis on ‘dead’. No one else heard it, I guess, even the guy who said it might not have noticed it. This type of conditioning of the mind to look for ideas, observing and listening to people is very important for any creative person”, he explains.

But starting off his own venture was a little difficult, at least initially. M G agrees. “Right from setting up the business to finding a decent printer everything has been very challenging. The amount of time and effort required to sort out issues related to payment gateways and banking are simply the most challenging aspects of the business. Any slip ups could easily land you in trouble in the future. But persistence pays off ” he insists.

Although the design, payment and general handling of the website is all managed by M G himelf, there are two other team members – Armin and Sukita – who work on sales, marketing and operations with him. With a team and a licensed business now, does he see it becoming a full time occupation? “Since we already have a lot of things like material sourcing, printing and delivery sorted out, the entire thing almost runs on auto pilot. Slowly but steadily it has started to pick up and when the situation demands us to put 24 hours a day on MGEEZ we will be more than glad to do so” he says.

While lending his name to his own business is indeed a dream achieved successfully, what about competition I ask. Isn’t he worried that there are too many websites doing similar work? “When we decided to start MGEEZ, we never knew that there were so many tee shirt labels in Mumbai, let alone in India. I am pretty sure we would have re-thought our decision had we known it before. Well, like they say ignorance can be bliss sometimes!” he says with a smile.

Speaking about his future plans, M G says “Even though all our tee shirts are Unisex, our designs mainly appeal to a male audience. So we are coming up with new designs targeted specifically at the women audience. Our designs have a lot of appeal to a western audience – so we are looking at making international deliveries also in the future”.

If he had to pick between all his designs, which would be his favourite? “I would say ‘Just cut the crap, man’ and ‘monster eye’ are my favourites. The first one because it conveys a sharp message in a not so offending manner and the second one because it was one of the first designs I did as a tee shirt designer”. And what if he were to make a graphic on Mumbai? What would that look like? He says it would be “something like the busy graphic on the background of MGEEZ.com”, rounding off our conversation.
