Beat The Heat: Top Ten Ways To Keep Calm And Enjoy Summer

{1 Comment}

With each passing day, the glaring rays of the sun are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Despite the blazing heat, the soul of the Mumbaikar is not one to be deterred. Instead of staying at home, waiting for the sun to set, here are some tips to help you in your quest of stepping out of the house and having fun without being beaten by the heat:

Visit Water-Parks: The best way to have fun with friends and not let the heat bother you is to head for the water-parks in Mumbai, either Water Kingdom or Tikuji-ni-Wadi. For those who don’t want to just splash around in the water, there are lots of rides as well. Just remember to pack your swimming gear and sunscreen and get set for a day of complete fun and merriment. And oh! You can also try Adlabs Imagica, Mumbai’s first theme park launched recently.

Go Ice-Skating: Playing sports can be quite exhausting in the midst of burning summer. Ice-skating, however, is one sport that does not allow you to work up a sweat. Go ice-skating at Atria Mall (Worli) or visit Essel World – the heat may not allow you to enjoy all the rides in the amusement park but the ice-skating rink is worth a visit. You may also visit Water Kingdom later.

Seek Refuge in Shopping-Malls: Even if shopping isn’t really your thing, shopping-malls serve as a good place to hang out. You can enjoy some tasty treats at the food-court at the mall; or you could have some fun with your friends by simply browsing stores and trying on outfits even though you may not wish to buy them! Some malls, like R-Mall in Mulund, hold various workshops that you could sign up for; or you could just visit the multiplex inside the mall and watch the latest movie!

Explore The Theatre Scene: Watching movies can get boring after a while, especially if there are no good releases. Don’t be disheartened! Watching a play is an equally delightful experience. Look up the show-timings of plays at Prithvi Theatre (Juhu), NCPA (Nariman Point), Rangsharda Auditorium (Bandra-West) or Gadkari Rangayatan (Thane-West) and allow yourself to be mesmerized by some fine theatrical performances.

Bus-Tours: It has often been said that the journey is always more important than the destination. However, in a city like Mumbai, everyone is always in a hurry to reach somewhere thereby making it difficult to appreciate the sights and sounds that lie on the way. In the midst of the heat, just hop on an air-conditioned bus and enjoy the view of the road from your window-seat. The AS-503 or the AS-505 gives you the chance to ride across the Vashi Bridge while the A-76 AC Exp Colaba takes you on the Bandra-Worli Sea-Link and gives you a chance to enjoy the gorgeous view of the skyline as seen from the sea-link.

Hang Out In A Coffee Shop: Spend some time catching up with friends over a cup of coffee at any local coffee-shop near your house. Amidst coffee and conversations, you can also carry a pack of Uno cards and enjoy a few rounds of Uno with your friends.

Pleasure Your Taste-Buds With Some Cool Delights: Summer-time is when we all scream not just for ice-creams but also for gelatos, milk-shakes, juices and smoothies. Visit the nearest Natural Ice Creams outlet and grab a scoop of mango ice-cream or shake. For all those who are calorie-conscious, try Zelos n Zest (Shivaji Park) and Gelato Italiano for gelatos; most of the flavours are 99% fat-free. Juice-bars are also a good option – check out Bachelor’s at Girgaon Chowpatty. You could also enjoy the coconut water, ice-golas and kulfis at Juhu Beach.

Pamper Yourself At The Spa: Indulging in a de-stressing spa treatment is one of the best treats you can give your body on a sultry, hot afternoon. It will also help you calm your mind. Check out The Four Fountains Spa or Sukho-Thai for some affordable and relaxing foot and body massages.

Visit the Museums: For most people, museums are an extremely boring affair but you can check out the Monetary Museum (Ballard Estate) and some of the sections of the Prince of Wales Museum (Fort) that have interesting artifacts on display.

Frequent Libraries: If books are your best friends, spend some time at Crossword, Landmark, or Oxford Bookstore. You may also check out the quaint book-store called KitabKhana or check out our list of fun places in Mumbai to grab a coffee and curl up with a book. You can also check out these amazing libraries in the city that stock some of the rarest books.

These are some ideas to ensure that the sun does not play spoilsport and mess your fun quotient. So, are you planning to stay cooped up in your house or are you going to step outside and beat the heat? What are your favourite ways to enjoy summers in Mumbai?
