#MumbaiList: Bring On The Beer!

I was sitting at Sammy Sosa (New Link Road, Oshiwara) and having a conversation with the owner of this Mexican themed restaurant, when he made a very important observation about beer: It is the world’s most widely consumed alcoholic beverage and is brewed in almost every part of the world! So a sampling of international beers can actually take you on a world wide journey.

“You can’t be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline”– Frank Zappa

When Sammy Sosa first opened, they had an introductory beer festival which brought in the crowds. Though the festival was supposed to be a one off, the response was so good that they began stocking up their bar with interesting and exotic beers from all parts of the world. They source and serve over 45 varieties of the brew! Mumbai was thirsty for more, and their thirst would be quenched.

I wasn’t much of a beer drinker before I started patronizing this joint. But one taste of the French Jenlain had me hooked. Since then I have tried the Portuguese Cerveja Sagres and the Estonian Viru. For those who want something fruity they also serve the Belgian Liefmans Fruitesse, a lovely light beer! Perhaps one of the only ‘girly’ beers.

Jug Chug, The Little Door

For the more valiant guzzlers, The Little Door has periodical beer chugging contests: ‘The Jug Chug Chaimpionship’. Be the quickest to chug down a mug of beer and you will find your (slightly tipsy) self on their Wall of Fame. You’re love for the brew and your beer belly will be glorified! But don’t be fooled, this is a serious competition, you can’t drop or waste even a drop and you will have to face competitors in three rounds before you are crowned winner!

Good ol’ Woodside Inn at Colaba has been a hot favourite for townie beer lovers. Their branch at Oshiwara has monthly beer tasting workshops for those interested in knowing their brew a little better. This month, the event will happen on June 8th following which international beers like Fullers London Pride, Brooklyn Lager and Schneider Weiss among many more will be available all month.

The Irish House

Till the 23rd of June Taj Land’s End, at Bandra will be hosting an international beer festival at the Atrium Lounge. They will serve over fourteen different brews including Italian Birra Morretti Chinese Tsingtao. So head over and sample one beer for Rs.375 or order a selection of three for Rs. 975.

The Irish House, (Lower Parel) promises a true Dublin experience, which of course would be incomplete without copious amounts of beer. They boast of a fair number of international beers including Mexican Coronitas, Japaneese Asahi and the Dutch Amstel Light. Plus, for those who like their drafts fresh from the tap, The Irish House promises to please.

Of course, many of these experiences might cost you a small fortune, and when you are happy sticking to the domestic selection there are always cheap alternatives. Old timers will swear by South Bombays Alps, tucked away in the colonial lanes behind the Taj. It has a dingy charm. Don’t expect much from the food, but then again when you have a cold one in your hand almost anything goes down, right? Alternately, Colaba’s Cafe Mondegars and Cafe Leopold’s are also hot favourites among college goers.

Bandra boys will vouch for the always crowded and aptly named Janta, which is hands down the most popular watering hole in the suburbs. At any odd hour of the night, it teams with all kinds sharing the unimmitable Janta experience: expats looking for the Indian experience, tatooed drummer boys, post-work corporate types, gangs of giggly girls and rickshawalas. It is one of those ‘must-have’ Mumbai experiences.

World over, beer is associated with relaxation, good company, spirited interactions, celebration and sport. It seems this love for the brew has been around since time immemorial and many of you would agree with Plato when he said “He was a wise man who invented beer.” Let’s raise our glass to whoever it was. Cheers!
