There are few moments in life as joyous as those when you meet like-minded people. The rush of being in the company of someone who shares similar passions is intoxicating and tells you that ‘you’re not alone’. No, I am not talking about successful first dates here.

The reference is to those chance meetings between strangers that has led to the creation and execution of a business idea. These businesses are run on instinct, gut, passion and they work on the trial-and-error method. This rawness and innocence is what makes them stand out from the rest of the pack.

Glam Food
The girls behind Glam Food – Ashrita Chinchankar and Amrita Kaur – are your regular amateur/home cooks. While Ashrita is a pilot on a sabbatical, Amrita is an RJ who only recently moved to Mumbai. Both girls met at a food review (via twitter) where they discovered they share similar views on the concept of home-cooking.

‘Our premise at Glam Food is to encourage people to cook food at home more often and to enjoy the process.  We want them to cook food that is simple and yet has an attitude to it,’ says Ashrita. In their workshops (so far conducted in Indore, Bhopal, Delhi, Mumbai) the girls teach a batch of 30 people how to cook not-so-regular dishes like ‘Shahi Tukda with Mascarpone Rabdi’, ‘Feta’Shrooms’ and so on. Glam clothes, glam personality and now Glam Food – what more could women (or men) ask for!

Cybersmartie
One evening as Shekhar Tripathi and Satyantan Sen were going through the FB profile of the latter’s young nephew, they realised how much he (and thus young children at large) were susceptible to cyber crime/fraud/bullying. It was from this sudden realisation and the willingness to do something about it that Cybersmartie – a cyber safety and security workshop targeted at kids in classes’ four to ten – was born.

As destiny would have it at the onset of the project Shekhar met Neha Doshi, an HR college alumnus with 13 years of teaching experience, on twitter and she immediately decided to join the firm as a working partner. Cybersmartie has already conducted workshops at Lilavati Podar School and JBCN School, Borivali and they continue to contact schools and collaborate with teachers + parents. If you are a parent then it would certainly be in your interest to request your child’s school to conduct a Cybersmartie workshop. Knowledge over ignorance, any day!

Project 35 Trees
Until now, we’ve seen in movies how teachers inspire the lives of their students. Here’s one such incident that happened for real. Hari Chakyar, a Wilson College BMM student, met Prof. Sudhakar Solomonraj in the Nature Club of his college. Prof. Solomonraj ‘taught’ Hari to appreciate nature’s gifts – forests, wildlife, etc. and these teachings had such a deep impact on Hari’s mind that he decided to do something to educate people about nature and its importance.

Thus was born Project ‘35’ Trees. In collaboration with Anthony Karbhari, a freelance filmmaker and fellow Wilson BMM-ite, Hari will travel for a period of four months across the length and breadth of India and educate school kids about the importance of planting trees and highlight the impact of global climate change. This epic journey, beginning of the 10th of October, 2012 will be documented by Anthony and the documentary aims to reach out to people in all 35 states + union territories (hence, the name) and hopefully inspire a few. The cost for this effort is 5 lakhs and Hari is welcoming generous donations for the same. This cause sure is worth your money, no?

Sometimes I wish I was Shandler – quirky like Sheldon and sarcastic + funny like Chandler. But then, I am me. The girl who needs her life to be a collage of small joys, brain-tickling conversations and as impulsive as it is cautious.
