As Mumbaikars, we are used to standing in queues – in the trains, while waiting to pee during the interval at the movies, even at Siddhivinayak. But none of them seem as painful as waiting outside the fitting rooms during a sale. While the good thing about a sale is that there’s something for everyone, the bad thing is also that: there’s something for everyone. So I put my gym shoes on and ventured headfirst into the adventure to produce a list of what’s hot in sales and what’s stale this season.

I headed over to Infiniti 2, because it’s the best mall to go to in the suburbs, if you want to check out a lot of brands under one roof. What I really like about that mall is that it is very well planned – all the shoe stores are next to each other, so are the bags, same for kids brands and national brands like Westside – which is next to Reliance Trends and Pantaloons.

ALDO: Mostly Stale
To start with, I went to Aldo and ended up regretting that I did. What was disappointing was that in spite of all the posters screaming ‘SALE! UP TO 70% OFF’ I didn’t really find anything that was a full 70% off, or for that matter, even 50% off. At the sunglasses stand, an ambiguous sign said ‘Two for the price of one’, which the assistant confirmed did not mean ‘Buy one get one free’. The handbags are available at 20-30% off, but that’s if any of them catch your eye. I did find a cute pair of jelly T-strap sandals in neon colours, on 30% off, which kind of salvaged the experience.

Zara shoes that were on the wrong shelf!

Zara – Sale, yes, and a good one!
Next I headed to Zara, which was, contrary to popular opinion, not swamped. Week days are the secret to shopping in peace, I have realized now. I think Zara used it’s space better than any other store because of the clearly marked sale sections. Every wall had its own shelf with its own price. There is something thrilling about looking at a shelf and knowing anything on that shelf is going to be exactly Rs. 990. I think it comes with being a girl. Although having said that, I found one pair of shoes on the Rs. 990 shelf and nearly died of excitement until I check the price on the shoe, which said Rs. 1790. I know, it’s still a steal but it’s 800 bucks more than I initially thought it to be! This is the stuff violent wars are made of.

Incidentally, I’ve worked at a book shop when I was studying in the UK and when a customer found a book on a shelf marked ‘3 for 2’, we had to sell them under that offer, regardless of whether it really was or not. I had no such luck at Zara though and moved on to other sections. Overall, the collection is a good one and I’d say this is one store you should not miss while hunting for a good bargain this season.

Westside, Mumbai

Westside: Something for everyone
To balance out the poshness, I went into Westside which is not a bad idea if you’re the kind who does not like spending hours trying to find something. It has a lot of brands in one place – which you can try at the same time in one go and make your choice. From stuff worth Rs. 399 to Rs. 3310 – the range is very wide. So if you’re in a rush and want an idea of what’s available with brands like Remanika and Vero Moda – try checking here.
Sale on till: 31st July

Forever New: Where Old Is Gold
Forever New is the other store I peeked into before heading out and was most excited when the first thing I saw – a pretty pair of beige shorts – was on actual 70% off! I generally love the collection at Forever New on most days and today was not an exception. Even though their stock is limited, there were a lot of dresses and shirts on straight 50% and that is really the easiest way to make a girl happy – pointing out to these signs. The accessories are all about 30% off, which is not a bad deal at all when you look at the individual prices.

Vero Moda: Good Reason To Shop
Vero Moda is one of my favourite brands and the store I was most excited about. Now the thing with a brand you really like is that you probably visit it a lot and are therefore quite up-to-date with all the new collections that come – when they come to the store. I’ve seen most of the dresses at Vero Moda and have been moved to tears when I came across something I couldn’t afford. Today was a day of my revenge for all those times. Even though these dresses were only about 30% off, I jumped at the opportunity – which is probably the key to shopping at every sale. Since it is a stock clearance sale, it’s your chance to come back and buy anything you thought was overpriced when you first saw it. So tonight, before you sleep, make a list of things you’ve wanted to buy for a while and then rush to the closest store. Before the stocks run out!
