I generally love a good secret. The hushed tones, the clandestine nature of keeping something under wraps, waiting for that opportune moment for the big reveal. All elements that make the whole deal irresistible. But I have major caveat to that rule. No secrets when it comes to food. Never! So imagine my consternation when I heard that there were two major foodie secrets being kept from me in my very own city. Two secret supper clubs that weren’t open for just about any and everyone. Places that boasted of elevated dining experiences meant for serious food worshippers with rather deep pockets. You had to earn your ‘invite’ through some serious sleuthing.

So, for weeks I tried to crack these culinary enigmas using all the tricks of my journalistic trade. I asked friends, foes and even strangers if they’d heard about the aforementioned clubs, to precious little success. Frustrated I gave up my search and focused my obsession on other things… Then suddenly one fine day I see a very Spartan and nondescript invite nestled in the confines of my email inbox simply saying—“We are looking for those who enjoy surprise and wonder in their food as much as they do in their lives”—and asking if I’d like to be a part of an upcoming secret dinner. Barely had I had this sink in when I got another invite from the other secret club for a similar dinner.

Imagine that, when I’d just about given up the chase, I was brought right back in the race to suss out the two elusive clubs. And because I believe in the rather corny saying that ‘sharing is caring’ (OK, that’s not really a saying, I just made that up!) I’m bringing you into the realm of Mumbai’s secret supper clubs and pop-up restaurants.

Secret Supper Project: Hosting secret multi-course suppers every month, this club is helmed by a man who refuses to reveal his identity, but is known to be a superb host by providing his diners with gourmet food catered to by some of Mumbai’s top chefs along with free-flowing wine. And although he is loathe to speak of payment for his dinners, a ‘gift’ of Rs 2,500 is appreciated. He also states that he regrets that he cannot entertain any dietary restrictions, so sorry all ye vegans and gluten allergic folks out there. The venue is revealed once one RSVPs to his invite that he sends out only to a select few. Hmm, now doesn’t that make me feel über special? Contact: [email protected]

Pico’s Pop-Up: The initiative of Nikhil Kumar, Pico’s Pop-Up hosts a series of themed dinners regularly. The last one that was held on the 13th of this month was hosted at The Last Ship in Bandra and explored ‘The Art of Comfort Food’. The food served was comfort food (duh!) from around the world, tapas style, alongside participatory art installations and short videos. And there was loads of wine and sangria to keep one and all happy. The cost was Rs 1,200 (plus taxes) for tapas plus two drinks with Rs 200 for additional sangria. Don’t miss the next one!
