Welcome to my favourite (and rather dichotomous!) foodie time of the year when austere days of fasting and abstinence give way to passionate feasting post sundown. The holy month of Ramzan (or Ramzaan/Ramadan) has me totally ensnared in its foodiliciousness with a vice-like grip that I simply can’t wriggle out of, given the bountiful iftaar treats that lie in store.

Sweets, savouries and ice-cold milky drinks form the tantalizing trifecta of treats that sees me making bi-weekly foodie jaunts to the gastronomic strongholds of street dining aka Mohammad Ali Road and Mahim where getting down and personal with a plate of pure heaven while being pushed and shoved by the hoi polloi is all part of the ‘experience’.

And for those who’d rather not venture onto the streets for their dose of all the fun, we bring you Neel who has ‘glammed’ up street fare on their new Ramzan Menu without leaving out the soul of the food!

Mohammad Ali Road

Haleem
Haleem

Start off at the lane alongside the stunning Minara Masjid where treats like grilled skewers of gurda (kidney), kaleji (liver) and boti jostle for space with grilled batér (quail), tandoori chicken and bheja (brain) fry for the adventurous. A little ahead, make a stop at the Noor Mohammadi Restaurant for a plate of their melt-in-the-mouth nalli nihari, haleem and white biryani. Suleman Usman Mithaiwala is the uncrowned king of all things sweet with its many offering like the calorific malpuas, phirni, aflatoon and assorted halwas.

Surti Bara Handi in the Bohri Mohalla is truly the king of the bara handi which is a mixture of twelve pots holding within their bowels unctous simmering gravies like paya (trotters), nalli (marrow), pichda (ox tail), topa (ox hump) and boti.
Still at the Bohri Mohalla, end your gourmandizing session with a bowl of the terrific custard apple ice cream at Taj Ice Creams and you’ll have every reason to send to me a very sweet ‘thank you’ note!

Mahim

Chicken Reshmi Kababs
Chicken Reshmi Kababs

Often ignored when it comes to Ramzan food, the khau galli lane that lies adjacent to Midland Hotel off the main Lady Jamshedji Road in Mahim is teeming with wonders that will have you salivating all evening. Go on an empty stomach and wait for the evening dusk to settle on this foodie wonderland as the stall owners light up their stalls with fairy lights and bring out their goodies. Start off with a tall glass of shahi falooda at Baba Falooda which is nothing short of a legend thanks to its rich, milky falooda topped with creamy home-made ice cream. Pick up a ceramic bowl of ragda pattice at the stall next to Baba Falooda, while you balance a plate of freshly grilled sheikh kababs, chicken reshmi kababs, kaleeji and fresh round bread at Raeesbhai’s stall that has no name board but which everybody knows about. Just ask!

Opposite Raeesbhai is Zaheerbhai’s Arabian Chicken Shawarma shop that does what I think are the best shawarmas in the city. But if you want something more substantial, there is nothing quite like a plate of fragrant mutton or chicken biryani at Paramount a little further down the main road. And while you’re there don’t forget to tuck into a plate of their gently simmered buttery bheja masala with roomali rotis. For more sweet somethings, Sagar Sweets & Bakery opposite Paramount is THE place for malpuas and kulfis that come in a mindboggling variety of flavours.

Ramzan Menu at Neel
Though off the street and into the ‘sanitized’ air-conditioned environs of an upscale restaurant, the Ramzan Menu at Neel is by no means any less delectable. And make sure you end this feast with the special desserts like Malai Sheer Biraanj, Shahi Nawabi Tukda,Chandani Malpua and the Milk Cake.
