After creating a fair amount of buzz on the social media scene, Saffron Bay finally put out their ‘open’ sign. A small soiree last Thursday night celebrated its launch. Owner Ravi Sharma entertained some of Mumbai’s favourite party-people, whose presence added some extra stardust to the event.

Saffron Bay serves modern Mughlai food; culinary Indian masterpieces with a hint of western elegance. The menu does favor north Indian cuisine. But then surprises with dishes like a Goan fish curry or a Maharashtrian Kombdi Kalvan. South India finds little representation. The food isn’t necessarily true to tradition, but is definitely a representation of Mumbai’s eclectic mix of people who enjoy the good life. Bollywood Chicken certainly sounds like it belongs here! Chef Nirmal Noel Monteiro is the main man in Saffron Bay’s imperial kitchen, and brings over 30years of culinary experience to the table.

The bar menu is almost as long and extensive as the food menu; you’ll probably find a drink in there to suit your every fancy. They even have some special cocktails which sound interesting; be charmed by the ‘Anarkali’ or fall in ‘Love at Taj’. The place aims at being “a celebration of royalty” and you will most definitely be royally spoilt for choice, when it comes to the food and beverages.

The decor is merges Mughal opulence with a modern sensibility. In the words of owner Ravi Sharma, it blends “impeccable cuisine and serene ambiance.” Great thought has gone into the design. The dining area is separated into six different colour enclosures, each with coordinated art work, furniture and embellishments. There’s also a large banquet room of the first level, which can be booked for private parties. The space and menu can be personalized and adapted as per ones needs. The third section is a terrace bar (opening shortly) where one can enjoy some live music and overlook the sea.

In terms of grandeur Saffron Bay certainly catches the eye. Sitting pretty on Marine drive, it scores high on location with the potential of being a landmark on Mumbai’s most iconic promenade. Been there? Tell us how was your experience.
