Everyone in Mumbai has their favourite street food vendor where they head to cater to their ‘chatpata’ or ‘teekha’ cravings. Whether it’s the Mysore masala dosa or dabeli, bhel puri or pani puri, pav bhaji or wada pav or just the simple veg sandwich with the spicy green chutney. Just two slices of soft bread slathered with Amul butter and fiery green chutney trying to hold together all the layers of thinly sliced veggies or a sandwich filled with spiced potato masala, toasted to perfection with a generous brush of butter and green chutney on the top, the Bombay sandwich is truly brilliant! The sandwich fillings are unique but so are the toppings. You’ll find sandwiches or toasts hidden below a pile of crunchy sev, garlic chutney, mint chutney, Kurkure  and even shredded cabbage! The variations of the humble vegetable sandwich that are available in Mumbai are truly remarkable. Here are a few places to head to for a great sandwich in Mumbai.

Gupta Sandwich

Gupta sandwich at Breach candy (near the bus stop outside Mad over Donuts) sells only veg sandwich which bags thinly sliced onion, tomato, beetroot, potato and cucumber between super thin soft slices of bread. The green chutney here is extremely fiery so make sure you have a bottle of water handy or even better, grab a kala khatta slush from the Right Place nearby! P.S. Gupta also has sweet pumpkin chutney which will help lower the spice levels!

If you are interested in hogging on a huge grilled sandwich then head to Right Place next door where there is always a line to get the super big three layered triangular grilled sandwich filled with generous amounts of grated potatoes, tomato, cucumber, onion, capsicum and cheese.

Every college has their famous sandwich wala; just like the one outside Lala Lajpatrai college or outside Hinduja college, Charni road. Similarly, there is Baba’s sandwich near NM college which not only has great plain veg sandwich but also delicious masala toast. Also a special mention for his garlicky green chutney!!

Another famous sandwich stall near a college is Jay Sandwich outside National college. But Super Sandwich, which is tucked away in the lane behind National College, serves up the same menu but a tad bit better in terms of flavour. They have a huge variety of toasts to offer, like cheese chilli toast, masala toast, garlic toast, mayo sandwich and pizza toast. Do try the pizza toast which is stuffed with finely diced onions, tomato and capsicum tossed in sweet and spicy sauce and loads of cheese.

Sandwizza

Sandwizzaa, earlier called Swastik, near Santacruz station is always crowded with aunties shopping around the market. The sandwich masala here got so famous that they now sell packaged bottles of this masala. They have also opened branches in Andheri and Malad to cater to more hungry souls!

Samosa sandwich is another must have in Mumbai. There’s a sandwich wala who stands outside Heera Panna in the evenings selling crunchy samosas and few veggie slices squashed between two slices of bread which are slathered with green chutney.

There are many more sandwich walas tucked away in tiny lanes, outside schools, colleges and offices; each with their regular crowd enjoying the sandwich in its simple form or with a twist.

Our list obviously doesn’t cover all the sandwich walas of Mumbai but just a few favourites. Do share details about your favourite sandwich stalls in Mumbai with us by commenting below or email us at [email protected] to get featured in our Reader’s Write section.
