Having lived in Mumbai all my life, people from outside the city ask me this a lot: Have you ever seen a movie star? In fact, recently a friend from Lithuania who was visiting Mumbai demanded to see the Bollywood equivalent of Hollywood Boulevard. When I explained to him that we had no such thing and you had to just keep your eyes open when you’re at a 5 star hotel or at a popular club, he seemed a little put out.

I’m sure at some point or another, we’ve all been in that place – asked to show around places where you could do a little celeb spotting in Mumbai. After all, it is “home to Bollywood”. I have ever since taken it upon myself (after having asked a variety of friends) to compile a list of places where you are sure to spot a celebrity. Obviously, there are a lot of bars and restaurants like Escobar, Hakkasan, Olive, Prive, etc. to also help you with your celeb spotting, but this list consists a little more, for want of a better word, unconventional places.

Siddhivinayak Temple, Prabhadevi: Sachin Tendulkar, Aishwarya Rai, Shilpa Shetty are some of the celebs who frequent the temple. But as we’ve seen every time we went, it is usually crawling with all kinds of people. So late nights or early mornings would be the best time to be celeb spotting here and with some divine intervention you are bound to catch a star.

Outside Yashraj Studios, Andheri: Catch the likes of Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor and even Shahrukh Khan as they report to work at the famous Yashraj Studios. But you’ll have to be patient as there is no fixed time and cars with tinted windows roll down the road all day.

Carter Road, Bandra: Late night is the best time to spot the celebs here. The famous Khan family – Sohail, Salman and Malaika Arora Khan among them – often turn up for a late night drive.

Chhatrapati International Airport, Andheri: Especially before/after an anticipated event, you could park yourself right next to the paparazzi and participate in the gossip about who’s going with whom wearing what. While Anushka Sharma, Shahrukh Khan and Minissha Lamba have famously made headlines with their adventures with the customs department, Sonam Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, among a lot of others,  seemed to have mastered the art of making appearances at the airport.

Gold’s Gym, Bandra: I know a couple of friends who worked in the building, who swear by the celeb appearances at the gym – especially the health conscious, John Abraham and Bipasha Basu. Seeing Salman Khan sweating it out is also not an uncommon sight here.

Juhu Beach: Again, being present early morning will give you an advantage here. A lot of Bollywood celebs generally come for a run with their respective doggies and entourage in tow at this beach. From what I gather, Hema Malini and Milind Soman are commonly spotted here.

Lokhandwala, Andheri: This is where step moms, sisters, villains and best friends of heroes and heroines are best found. Walk around the lanes or pop into a coffee shop late in the evenings for a tête-à-tête with character artists from the world of TV and cinema.

Wankhede Stadium, Churchgate: Come IPL season, the famous team owners throng to the stadium to cheer for their respective teams. Shilpa Shetty, Preity Zinta, Juhi Chawla and Shahrukh Khan with his famous friends like Priyanka Chopra and Arjun Rampal are regulars at these matches (though it might be hard to spot Shahrukh Khan at this location for a while).

What’s your favourite place to go celeb spotting?
