Summer Trends 2013- Bright Colours & Stripes

When I randomly asked a bunch of my fellow fashion bloggers on Twitter what according to them are summer 2013 trends, I was so not prepared for their varied responses. While quite a few named summer staples such as pastels, floral, maxi dress/skirt, lace, denim jacket, sheer and cotton, others were more 2013 trends specific!

Like every season, summer 2013 is abundant in fashion trends to choose from, however my picks are more Mumbai/India friendly. These five trends are not only popular international runway and street style trends, but can easily be shopped in as well as can be worn by Mumbaites while braving the heat and humidity of the season.

Bright Colours: Summer is a season of colours. While most people prefer cool or pastel shades in this season, no one can escape the neons which have been added to the summer staples list as a carry forward from 2012. Somewhere between the delicate pastels and the bold neons, lies the bright and happy shades of lemon yellow, cobalt blue, fuchsia pink and emerald green that are perfect for our summer. These shades are not as bold as neon nor are they as soft as pastels, but bright enough to help you make a style statement without making you feel conscious about it.

Stripes: Be it classic nautical blue and white stripes or bold colourful ones, stripes of all sizes as well as orientations (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) are one of summer 2013’s biggest trend. From high street to street style and from dresses to shoes, stripes in all shapes, forms and colours are available. While we all grew up wearing stripes, to transform ordinary stripes into a fashion statement, pick a stripe pattern that complements your body type and accentuates your assets.

Monochrome: Thanks to the colour-block revolution, the oldest colour combination-black and white-was completely ignored by the fashion world for a while. Not anymore. Designers’ world over took a break from pairing bold colours together and returned to the basic monochrome combination this season. Even though this is summer 2013’s ‘IT’ trend, most people already have this combination in their wardrobes. Also literally anyone, irrespective of gender, age or body type can comfortably and confidently wear this age old combo.

Palazzo Pants: No summer is complete without its share of free-flowing silhouettes in super comfy fabrics. While maxi may never ever completely go out of trend, this summer it is making way for palazzo pants. For those who do not know what palazzo pants are, they are trousers with extremely wide legs that flare out from the waist. Keep in mind, if a wrong style is picked, palazzo pants can easily add weight or make one look bulky. The key is to opt for a cut best suited for your body type and height.

Neon Accessories: While 2012 was all things neon, 2013 is a little less neon obsessed. Do not get me wrong, neons are still as strong as ever, but instead of wearing head-to-toe neon, the current trend is the add neon pop in the form of accessories be it shoes, bags or jewellery. Plus, with monochrome taking over, neon accessories are a great way to add hints of colour pop to your black and white ensemble. This way you get to combine two summer 2013 trends into one stylish look.
