The Little Door's XL Burger

This week I’m dedicating this foodie column to all ‘ye gourmands out there, the oligarchs of excess, the pashas of portions and the sultans of size… It’s all about the gargantuan side of food and drinks available in our fair city. It is an ode to the edible (and drinkable!) whoppers that make Adam Richman and his challenges in TLC’s show Man vs Food look like a toddler playing with play dough. And yes, it isn’t for those who believe in the saying that “size doesn’t matter!”

Sundance Sasquatch at Café Sundance
To start things off, let me take you all back to one of the most fabulous discoveries we’d made a few months ago when we reviewed Café Sundance in its spanking new avatar. Yes, I’m ‘drooling eloquent’ about the mighty Sundance Sasquatch, a massive burger that lives up to its humungous name with 20 ounces of slow-cooked tenderloin beef, crispy bacon, mixed lettuce, pickled cucumber, fried egg, melted provolone cheese and avocado guacamole. All this for Rs 900 (and 4,000+ calories) and if you can wolf it down in half an hour, you can forget about paying your bill! How about it?

XL Burger at The Little Door
Still on the big burger trail, the XL Burger at The Little Door is a little tamer than the aforementioned behemoth, but just as challenging with a bun almost as big as a grown man’s face. This is stuffed with a patty of beef, chicken or fish with a fried egg and bacon as extras. Priced at a very modest Rs 266, this one is a bargain waiting to be chomped off.

Meter-long Pizza at Pizza Metro Pizza
Bringing a sense of innovation and fun to the already fun activity of pizza eating is Pizza Metro Pizza with its meter-long pizza for Rs 1,000+ (depends on your choice of toppings) that is a humungous slab of rectangular pizza dough onto which you can choose up to four different toppings which they will happily add on. My favourites are quattro frommagi, spicy pepperoni, aglio olio and and good ‘ol margherita. And yours?

Grande Nachos

Grande Nachos at The Irish House
The platter that these nachos are served on is almost the size a coffee table, I kid you not! For Rs 225 you will be treated to crispy corn tortillas smothered with refried beans, Mexican cheese, jalapeno and fresh peppers and if that’s not enough the whole shebang is bathed in vats of guacamole, sour cream and tomato salsa. Go get it at your own risk…

Apicius' Yard Long Cocktail
Apicius’ Yard Long Cocktail

The Yard Long ‘Vegas Style’ Cocktails at Apicius Kitchen and Bar
Served up in huge, colourful plastic dumbbell (or hourglass)-shaped glasses that light up at the press of a button, these Yard Long ‘Vegas Style’ Cocktails at Rs 600 a pop are the pride and joy of the Apicius Kitchen and Bar. You have a choice of four ginourmouos cocktails: the cocoa syrup and vodka-based Chokotini, the Apricot—that as the name suggests is made from apricot syrup with vodka and triple sec, the Itchi-Litchi with litchi crush and vodka and the Sun-Set that has Old Monk Rum, triple sec and mango juice. And if you can look beyond the rather tacky plastic glasses with built-in straws (kinda like an adult version of a sippy cup!), you’re in for a real treat.

The Giant Cocktail at Trader Vics Mai Tai Lounge
At this Polynesian-themed lounge bar almost every cocktail (Rs 455+), from the Scorpion Bowl, the Rum Giggle, and the signature drink, the TikiPukaPuka is served up in industrial sized mugs and glasses with the longest straws you will ever find. Perfect for sharing with mates or having a go at it on your own, if you’re that thirsty… but then again you can always blame it on the summer heat!
