Urban life is driven by a caffeine kick. We need coffee to wake us up, coffee to make conversation and if certain commercials are to be believed coffee to court the opposite sex. Fueled by Mumbai’s need for a racing metabolism, the Cafe culture has hit the city in a big big way.
From a glamorous version of the Tamilian filter coffee to the sludgy sediment of Turkish coffee, you can find it all in Mumbai’s cafes. But when it comes to making oneself a cup of joe at home, most of us sheepishly turn to that trusty packet of instant powder. Sacrilege in the eyes of the true coffee fanatics.
After 24 years of drinking quick fix instant coffee, Sahil Jatana chanced upon an old discarded coffee machine and began experimenting. He spent hours everyday reading and learning, with the aim of perfecting the skill of coffee making. He became quite the expert and soon the go-to guy when any friends or family had questions regarding the beverage. “I know a lot of people who are coffee drinkers and crave a good bean-brew at home or office, but are either lazy or clueless on how to go about the same” he explains.
Last year in May, after a company he worked with went kaput he decided it was time to take the hint from destiny. He shed his corporate avatar and became ‘The Coffee Coach’. He would share his passion for coffee and most importantly teach the world to “brew it right!”
He reveals the secrets to coffee making as the Coffee Coach on twitter and via his website. But for a real insight one will have to attend one of his workshops, as of now are conducted between Bandra and Matunga. He conducts these informative workshops for individuals, groups or corporates and for a nominal fee one can be coached by this self-declared ‘Coffee Nazi’.
Goes without saying then that he can now satisfy his caffeine cravings with his own creations and never needs to step out of his home. His current favorite coffee is an improvised blend, known only to him. You’re not about to get your hands on this safely guarded blend unless you visit his home or ‘The Underground Coffee Society‘, where he and his wife Sonika Bhasin host friendly fun filled evenings of coffee drinking. So far they have hosted over a hundred people via twitter. Follow their twitter handle to score an invite!
Sahil ultimately would love to open a cafe where he can serve signature blends. But for now he is busy with his website and workshops. He is also working on an online store where he will offer his own blends, basic equipment, merchandise, crockery etc. It’s another small step towards his ultimate goal, which in his words is to ‘caffeinate the world’!
