We Mumbaikars love gimmicks. And by ‘we’ I mean ‘I’. When combined with another obsession—food, what you have on hand is full blown hysteria that all but consumes me (pun intended!). Ever since I can remember, I have been fascinated with unusual restaurants. The more bizarre the better has been my mantra.

I’ve been known to throw hideously embarrassing tantrums as a 5-year-old begging to be taken for an ‘adults only’ dinner to Pearl of The Orient, The Ambassador Hotel at Churchgate’s revolving restaurant. Another revolving restaurant The Palace of the West Empress in the now-defunct Searock Hotel at Bandra’s Bandstand saw me troop in the night before my 7th grade history final exam for an ‘I-need-it-now!!!’ Peking Duck dinner. And I was lucky enough to be one of the last few diners at Suzy Wong, the wonderfully kitsch boat restaurant named after Richard Mason’s racy novel, floating off Mumbai’s Back Bay, which sadly shut down a week after my dinner there (I take no responsibility for that!).
Over the years, I’ve dined in the dark at a blindfolded restaurant in Bangkok, conquered my hydrophobia at an underwater restaurant in The Maldives, had breakfast with giraffes at a safari lodge in Kenya yada, yada yada…

So, imagine my delight when I see an email in my inbox announcing the opening of another such dining oddity—a moving bus restaurant or what I prefer to call a ‘restobus’. Called The Moving Cart, this 20-seater restobus is a joint venture between the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. and The Moving Cart Company that already runs another such restobus in Chennai. The multi cuisine mobile restaurant will have an open-to-sky upper deck and a fully air conditioned lower deck. The food will be catered to by Hotel Marine Plaza with all the frills like service, cutlery and crockery pat in place.

Hardik Shah, co-founder of The Moving Cart says “The Moving Cart is all new concept of food, fun and entertainment for the people of Mumbai. This launch will give a huge boost to promote tourism in Mumbai and great time for our Mumbaikars. Soon, we are coming up with more locations in Mumbai and will also enter international markets.”
According to John Dias (no relation, I swear!), the other co-founder, great care has been taken to ensure that the services offered to the guests should be world class. “Apart from our fixed trip timings, the bus will be open for corporate and school bookings with special packages for birthdays and anniversary celebrations, kitty parties and ring ceremonies.”

Every day, The Moving Cart will make three voyages. Each will be one and a half hours long which will begin from 1 pm, then followed by 8 pm and then 10 pm. The pickup point will be from Hotel Marine Plaza after which the bus will take a ‘U’ turn from Nariman Point, heading towards Chowpatty and from there back to Hotel Marine Plaza. While diners enjoy the pleasant ride viewing the magnificent Marine Drive and entire Queen’s Necklace, they will be served a 12 course meal. The unlimited 12 course menu will consist of Jain, vegetarian (Rs. 1,200 per person) and non-vegetarian (Rs. 1,400 per person) cuisine. The price will also include mocktails, soups, salads, starters, main courses, and desserts.
Now, before I throw another tantrum—this time a quarter life one—someone please take me there, will you?

The entry to The Moving Cart is only on prior online booking. A table can be booked through their website and the menu option would be giving during the booking process.
