October is the Breast Cancer Action Month. Countries the world over have joined in to show solidarity with the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign that was launched in 1988, and has spread the across the globe. The Breast Cancer Action Month aims at increasing awareness and stressing on the importance of early detection and treatment of the ailment.

In India, Breast Cancer India shares alarming statistics. Breast cancer accounts for about 25% to 33% of all cancers in women in our country. And sadly, over 50% breast cancer patients in India are detected when they are in stages 3 and 4, which greatly impacts the survival rate.

Breast Cancer India also mentions that, “A 5 year survival rate of breast cancer patients in the United States, over the last few decades, has improved from 75% earlier (1975) to 89% presently (2004 data). Though no such similar statistics are available in India, from the reports of PBCR, as also from the statistics of individual cancer centres, the overall 5 year survival for breast cancer patients in India doesn’t appear to be even 60% presently.”

It is heart warming to see how individuals, brands, organizations and governments the world over have come together to show their support for this cause in the most subtle, aesthetic, artistic way possible… by lighting up their most important landmarks in pink; some for a week, some for a month, all sharing the the sentiment for good. The campaign was initiated in 1992 by Estee Lauder Comapanies and completes 20 years in 2012.

The Bandra Worli Sea Link lighting up is also part of the Estee lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign’s Global Landmarks Illuminations Initiative. All this week from 5th October to 12th October, the Bandra Worli Sea Link will be lit up in pink 7:30 pm onward, to spread awareness. And it looks magnificent! If you visit the Sea Link, do share our photos with us at [email protected]

Here are breath taking photos of the world’s landmarks that have been lit up for the Breast cancer Awareness Campaign.
