My friends stare at me blankly as I relentlessly explain that it does in fact, exist! No we aren’t taking about the Loch Ness monster. That argument could take a while. We are talking about SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) or seasonal depression. Don’t believe there is such a thing? You should totally read about it here. It’s something that happens to me year after year, every monsoon. And I’m not the only one. Lots of people feel the absence of our dear ol’ sunshine and get all sulky during the rains. But fear not rain-haters, because I’m adept at battling the monsoon blues. I could totally help overcome that dreary, horrible feeling that I know oh-too-well! Let’s call this exercise Pitter Patter Purge: There Ain’t No Cure Like Chocolate To begin with nothing, and I mean nothing, will help as much as getting yourself a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Legend has it, that there is no better cure for monsoon blues. Okay, I lied about the legend part. But head over to San Churros for that perfect chocolate brew on a rainy day. Though there are variants like cinnamon and white chocolate which are just as delectable, their Classic Spanish Hot Chocolate takes the cake. And if you are not the kind to stop at one hot chocolate, I’m with you pal. I suggest you also try the basic Hot Chocolate at Barista and the dark version at Theobroma. Sinful, to say the very least. LOL Till You Fall While the hot chocolate is a start, I would really suggest you step out to some place that makes you real happy. Like The Comedy Store perhaps. With your favourite stand-up comedians at their funniest best, it’s a guaranteed laughathon, the weather be damned. Another option is to saunter into Lagerbay at Bandra and catch Improv Comedy doing what they do best. Lucky for you, high spirits are a guarantee when alcohol meets humour. And if you can’t make it to any of these events, don’t worry. You can always catch the latest funny movie in a theatre near you. So whether it’s a rom-com or an animated movie, I have a feeling you might walk out of the theatre in a good mood, grinning and maybe splashing a little even. Make Room In Your Room If you don’t feel like getting out at all, call in your power rangers, better known as your friends. For the girls I suggest an emergency summon of the gang just to watch Sex and the City. Because no matter how many times you’ve watched it, Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha always help. The perfect cure to your rain soaked woes lies in their quirky stories, their quest for love and their irreverent fashion choices. And before you know it, you’ll be in New York, just like that...potholes forgotten completely. And for the guys, I just have one word. Nintendo. Collect the friends, plug in the Wii, plug out the rain. It’s rather simple. Just the way you’ll like it no? Let The Makeover Take Over Post this happy recreation in your own space, I imagine you would be ready to step out. And I can think of only one way to do that: in style. I suggest you head straight to B:Blunt, Mad O Wot, Smash Salon or Hakim’s Aalim for a new haircut. Where they ought to give you that irreverent style statement they are famous for. You could also head to The Lakme Salon for a complete makeover, to the M.A.C Cosmetics store where they know it best and are often happy to help, or even to Shoppers Stop where they could be offering a free makeover if you are lucky. Now we are getting somewhere, one fashionable step at a time. Truth is you just cannot be ready for any event, season change included, if you’re not dressed for it. So after a swanky new makeover, go shop yourself silly at Linking Road for Rain Chappals and Hill Road for a new umbrella and brand new raincoat. My eyes are on the new trench style ones that look tres chic. If you can’t stop at that and you come back with SALE written all over you, I won’t judge. ‘Tis the season to be shopping, fa la la la... A Big Bite of Life If this shopping spree makes you hungry, head straight to Bombay Blue for the irony. No I’m kidding, head there for the absolutely delightful food, especially if you are a cheese fan. Being corny and cheesy is your way out of that mood. Luckily for you, the answer to your woes can be served on a platter. Order the special platter which comes with some hummus and pita, cheese corn balls, nachos and cheese and onion rings. Now that’s what I call happiness. You could also head to the evergreen Yoko Sizzlers. What I love about this place is that it’s been offering the same delicious fare for years now and hasn’t lost its charm in an attempt to be cool. So whether you fancy chicken or cheese, sometimes, it’s meant to be steaming. Another find I’d love to share with you’ll is the absolutely sumptuous Cream Cheese Maggi at Mocha. You can call it a pasta, or call it Maggi, but it is comfort food all the way. Every last twirled bite of it. Drive Away The Blues If I am to give you the most honest tip of them all, nothing helps as much as having your friends around if you’re feeling low. So take them for a drive, blast your favourite music and just enjoy that weather everyone seems to love. I would suggest a fun album like Cocktail for your drive. It can lift your mood with a thumping number like Second Hand Jawani or a much more soulful one like Yaariyan. Either way, the heady mix of this album should lift your spirits for sure. Add a drive at Worli Sea Face and you are set. While you’re there, don’t forget to stop at the Mafco Stall for some garam coffee or an Energy drink. It could be your much needed dose of rain soaked memories. The ones you will smile at many years down the line. The silver lining that came along with the dark clouds.
