Apologies in advance if the header above alluded to a corny joke that may have had three wise men, a barking deer and a white owl as its chief protagonists doing unspeakable things to each other! Let me assure you that it is a mere attempt on my part to chronicle superb new eating and (in this case) drinking joints, so you can nurse a bottle of beer and wolf down a plate of buffalo wings in the cozy confines of the indoors, while letting the rains do their number outside.

So, this week I’m going to introduce you to three restobars or gastropubs—whatever you chose to call them—that are slowly carving a niche for themselves as watering holes serving a mind-boggling variety of tipples with perfectly yum nibbles to boot.

Three Wise Men
Kitted out to resemble on old English pub, replete with a whimsical red telephone booth and old paintings suspended from its ceiling, the rather dimply-lit Three Wise Men (TWM) is a conveniently located gastropub that is hard to miss opposite the Santacruz Police Station (better watch those tequila shots, now!). With a libation menu that spans two sides of a huge cardboard, TWM offers everything from sangria pitchers, beers and naughtily named shots like Blow Job for the adventurous among us.

As for the ‘gastro’ part, TWM has a great choice of finger food such as assorted bruschetta, buffalo’s milk mozzarella sticks, Mexican style chicken quesadillas and tempura batter fried prawns. Don’t miss out on the house specials like – The Mexican Bowl, Burrito, Chicken Wings, Camembert Rings and House Appetizer Sampler. While the service here can be a tad slow and the wait staff rather clueless, TWN scores overall for its great ambience and fun vibe.

The Barking Deer
Joining the ranks of the rest of the animal kingdom we are seeing restaurants and bars being named after, The Barking Deer is the newest joinee. Also neighbours to one such animal, err… I mean, amphibian, Blue Frog in the Mathuradas Mills Compound of Lower Parel, The Barking Deer is a waiting-in-the-wings microbrewery that hopes to be brewing its own ales and larger in under a month’s time! But till then, we will have to make do with the over 40 varieties of domestic and international beers available here that range from Belgium’s Leffe Blonde to Spain’s Estrella Galicia to apna good old Kingfisher!

For those of you, like me, who aren’t beer drinkers, there is a whole lot other to whet your palate like the classic or beer cocktails, whiskies and other spirits. Nibbles like the blue cheese empanads with pineapple salsa, charamula prawns, cheddar sticks and beef tostadas are great supporting acts to mains like the ricotta and spinach crepes, the lamb shanks in a beer sauce and the grilled basa on a bed of barley risotto. And don’t even think of leaving this place without a taste of the delectable desserts that take on names like cappuccino crème brulee and three berries cheese cake. The spacious, rough hewn look of the place makes this a perfect ‘guys kind of place’, but with a sophisticated edge!

Following in the footsteps of The Barking Deer, this newest restobar too is a to-be microbrewery that is inching slowly towards getting all the requisite licenses and permissions in order to brew beer on its premises. But here too, they are pulling out all the stops to make sure your wait is fruitful with drinking options like domestic and international beers and interesting cocktails like the whisky, triple sec, orange chunks, egg white redolent Biddy, Bailey’s, cranberry bits, chipotle trilogy called Meesh among others. For small bites, do consider the fish and chips with the fish being ensconced in a beer batter, the chorizo hot dog and the bite sized mini lamb chops. But like they say the proof is in the pudding and in this case, I’ll reserve my finer comments till the microbrewery is fully up and running!
