Food Bytes: Two One Two All Day And Eat Deli.Cafe, The Perfect Restaurant Twosome For A First Date

Norwegian Salmon Steak at Eat-Deli.CafeGiven my almost allergic aversion for mush, hyperbolic lovey-doveyness and all other assorted accouterments that go hand-in-hand with ‘new love’ as it were, I am very rarely asked, in my capacity as a foodie, to suggest romantic date venues. No one asks me about places where you can get heart shaped cup cakes with pink frosting. Or about eateries in the city whose waiters break out with silly boy band renditions of puerile numbers (cheesy dance steps included!) like “nothings gonna change my love for you” and its ilk.

So, I was very surprised when the 18-year-old younger brother of a dear friend called me up one day last week and requested me to suggest a couple of places where he could take the object of his six month ‘long’ affection out for a first date. His brief was clear: he didn’t want the place to be ‘geriatrically boring’ (his very words), bust the bank expensive and too fussy. He wanted a classy place that served awesome food and had the right mood, minus the teenybopper frills (go figure!). And like the food influencer that I am, I gave him the following two suggestions for his debut date with his prospective lady love.

And while I won’t tell you all which one he eventually picked, be rest assured that his date was über successful and he’s now asked for a few second date suggestions. But more on that in a later Food Bytes column. Till then, chew on these…

Two One Two All Day
Two One Two All DayTHE DOPE: After the well-earned success of Two One Two, Worli, Ketan Kadam and Chef Mikhail Sahani have come up with their redux version of the brand with this, their more chilled out, relaxed eatery aptly called Two One Two All Day. Housed alongside the very posh Mini Cooper Showroom at Santacruz, the restaurant is a classy, airy space done up in earth tones with plenty of light streaming in from the glass walls and from the overhead circular light fixtures. The decidedly nautical motif thanks to the strategically placed ship models, brings the romance of the ocean straight to suburban Mumbai.

THE FOOD: Balancing a very eclectic menu with old favourites from both Two One Two, Worli and their other restaurant—Sundance Café, the dishes on offer here are comforting and stylish at the same time, generally a tough feat for most. But Two One Two All Day succeeds here with aplomb thanks to appetisers like the multi-textured and flavoured Watermelon and Goat’s Cheese Terrine, the ‘gimme-more-NOW’ American Corn Soup with Sour Cream and Jalapeno, the sinfully good Truffle Fries and the Assorted Sausage Platter. Mains like the luscious Tagliatlle Pasta with Wild Mushrooms in a Cream Sauce, the Steak with Garlic Mash and the Smoked Chicken and Basil Risotto make a great middle course with their light and nuanced appeal. And before you start whispering sweet nothings in each other’s ears, do try their sweet somethings that take the form of a silken Triple Chocolate Mousse, a Raspberry Cheesecake with a lovely Caramel Gastrique and an Opera Cake that makes the mark.

THE MOST ROMANTIC DISH: I fell in lust with the paper-thin slivers of the Tenderloin Beef Carpaccio with Marinated Mushroom, Baby Arugula and Parmesan Shavings that almost had my vegetarian date decide to turn callously carnivorous right there and then!

THE COST: Rs 2,500 for two without alcohol and taxes

THE LOCATION: Beside Mini Cooper Showroom, Near Santacruz Police Station, Santacruz West. Call, 022 26615212

Eat-Deli.Cafe
Eat-Deli.CafeTHE DOPE: While it may be tiny in size (and thus perfect for a cozy date!), this café cum deli on the bustling Pali Baka intersection is big on everything else—taste most of all. The twin-leveled eatery has a communal dining look on the dimly lit lower level with its dark sofas and polished wood furniture, while the upper mezzanine level is conducive to some one-on-one time with intimate tables for two.

THE FOOD: From home-style breakfast fare like Granola and PBJ (Peanut Butter and Jelly) Sandwiches to salads like the Firecracker Spinach Salad with Orange Sesame Dressing, the Lobster Salad with Green Beans to soups like the awesome Calabaza, Coconut and Corn soup, Eat-Deli.Cafe is an ode to casual dining. But it does up the ante as far as its mains are concerned with offerings like the Irish Lamb Stew, the Garlic and Machengo Marinated Lobster and Penne in a blushing (and romantic!) Pink Sauce. Desserts here consist of a uniquely yummy Blue Velvet Cheesecake, a drool-worthy Hazelnut Ganache and a Carrot Cake with an interesting Coconut Frosting best had one-by-two!

THE MOST ROMANTIC DISH: Hands down the dish of the day for me at Eat-Deli.Cafe was the Norwegian Salmon Steak on Arugula Pesto and Wild Pepper Finished Risotto. The herb-y taste of the pesto and the pepperyness of the risotto are the perfect foils to the richness of the salmon, making this a happy threesome of a dish!

THE COST: Rs 1,500 for two without alcohol and taxes

THE LOCATION: 13 A/15, Dheeraj Arcade, Pali Naka, Ambedkar Road, Pali Junction, Near Pali Market, Bandra West. Call, 022 26400990
