Travel: Top Five Getaway Spots Near Mumbai Perfect For The Weekend

Opt for an unusual New Year’s Eve party and celebrate the beginning of the year at a pristine beach or near a moonlit river. These are also perfect spots for anyy weekend when you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Mumbai. Here’s a list of places where you can unwind, relax and rejuvenate, all close to the city.

Distance: 165km from Mumbai
Travel time: Around 3 hours
Nestled among the Sahayadris, Bhandardara is an excellent spot for enjoying the luxury of the hills. Hills are not the only beautiful sight here as Bhandardara is set at an elevation of 750m above sea level and located on the banks of the Pravara River. From the dammed waters of this river, the Bhandardara Lake is formed which is also known as Lake Arthur Hill. This lake is known for its beauty where one can enjoy a beautiful moonlit night.

The cold weather and beautiful surroundings also make it a perfect place. The area also comprises of forts and rich historical background. Ratangad Fort is one of the captured forts of Shivaji who used to spend leisure time in the fort. The fort provides ideal conditions for trekking and is extremely scenic and fascinating to view. There are two caves which can be seen at the top of the fort. Randha Falls is a 45 m high waterfall is also a famous spot in the area. and is situated 11 km from Wilson Dam. The water of the falls is used for hydro electric generation. It is a famous tourist spot in this area.
How to reach:
Bhandardara can be reached by bus, train or car. It is about 165 kms from Mumbai. If you travel by train, Igatpuri railway station is the closest.

Kamshet is a picturesque and exuberant hill station located in the Western Ghats and is well known for paragliding activities. With lush green surroundings, gushing streams and hilly terrains, Kamshet serves as a perfect spot this New Years Eve. Located at a height of about 2200 feet above sea level, the hills in and around Kamshet are dotted with ancient cave temples and fortresses.

The paragliding facilities in Kamshet attract a large number of flying sport enthusiasts. Soaring over the Pawna lake and gliding over the beautiful countryside gives a once in a lifetime experience. If you’re not a big fan of paragliding, you can have fun watching these paragliders take off in the sky from the Tower Hill, Shelar or Kondeshwar Cliff. The sight is something that can’t be missed! The winter’s here too are pleasant!
How to reach:
Kamshet can be reached by Bus, train and car. It is about 47 kms from Mumbai. You can board a train that you take you to Lonavala, and reaching there, take the local train to Kamshet or there are several taxis on hire from Dadar that take you to Kamshet.

Travel time: Around 3 hours
Murud is an exotic getaway located in Raigad district of Maharashtra. It is famous for coconut and betel nut trees. The long stretches of silvery sands and lush green surroundings are what make it attractive. Murud is a small fishing village famous for majestic forts, exquisite beaches and lovely surroundings.

These beautiful twin islands offer a fascinating sight. There are large numbers of churches and temples as well. The Bassein beach is quiet and tranquil and offers one of the best sunset views. This unspoilt and serene beach is the best spot to be at and unwind.
How to reach:
Murud-janjira can be reached by train, bus or car. You can either hire a taxi or board a train to Roha or Panvel from where you get buses to Murud. Many State transport buses also operate from Mumbai Central to Murud. Another way to get to Murud is by ferry from Mazgaon’s Ferry Wharf, to Rewas, which is 23 kms from Murud, or by catamaran from Gateway of India to Mandwa.

Travel time: 3 hours
Kashid is one of the best beaches in the Konkan region. This is the place to be if you want to spend a relaxing evening for New Years. The pristine beaches and silent waves make it the perfect destination to be at. The Phansad Bird Sanctuary is also close by that provides you with a visual trat to many birds and animals. Beware of the mischievous monkeys.

You can travel within Kashid in the tuk-tuks that are similar to rickshaws but take more than six people. The isolated beaches and untouched sand is the main attraction in Kashid. There are also several water sports one can enjoy at very reasonable rates.
How to reach:
Kashid can be reached from Alibag by road. Buses plying regularly between Mumbai central – Murud and Thane-Murud also halt at Kashid. You can also opt for a ferry service from Gateway of India to Mandava beach and take a MSRTC bus to Alibag. From Alibag station, many private shared tempos will drop you to Kashid.

Distance: Around 100km from Mumbai
Travel time: 1 hour 40 minutes
Durshet surprises you with its beautiful surroundings and as it is a forest patch filled with mango, mahua and teak trees. It comes with a river, a lake and a forest attached. The place is solitary heaven.

You can start your day watching tiger butterflies flitting around and identify calls of the bulbul and parakeet. Monkeys are a common sight in the forests here. Durshet is a picturesque place of visit with an abundance of greenery. Durshet is spotted with plenty lodges and cottages that make for a perfect stay. One can also enjoy activities like Kayaking, Rappelling and Valley Crossing. It also offers a pleasant and peaceful atmosphere.
How to reach:
Durshet is in the Konkan railway line. One can board a train from Mumbai CST or even avail of the taxi services. Travelling by car is also the best option. Public transport bus services are also available.
