It’s never too late for a getaway, whether for a day or a weekend! So I’m back with a recommendation! Tucked between Alibag and Murud Janjira is the quiet and quaint beach town of Kashid.  Just 135 kms away from our buzzing city, this tranquil North Konkan beach is perfect for both day trips and longer getaways.

The road to Kashid passes through lovely, green Konkani villages and is smooth, winding and straight. It was so straight that it felt a wee bit strange and checked with passersby every few kilometers to make sure we were on the right route. And all we got was “saral”, which means “straight ahead” in Marathi. So that’s just what we did.

You know you are in Kashid the minute you can view the open sea lined by gorgeous tall trees and Casuarina mangroves. The one and only beach in Kashid is 3 kms long and the villagers have assigned members to sweep the beach every morning so it stays as clean and serene as it is now. Not just that, they have also strung hammocks across the trees and put up wood and tin sheds for travelers. The perfect spot to hangout on a day trip!

And oh, did I mention the sunsets. The vast open view of the sunset makes for great spot and evenings find travelers and locals alike walking, cycling on the beach or surfing and swimming in the sea.

If you plan to spend a day or two in Kashid, there are a few hotels and resorts. But I would highly recommend you rent a cottage, preferably high up on the hills opposite the beach. In summers it is cool and breezy up in the cottages and in the monsoons the view is breath taking. Again been there twice just like Bordi, and enjoyed Kashid both in summers and in the monsoons!

Kashid also offers homestays which is a great option if you want to experience local hospitality and company. The food cooked in most homes is delectably spicy Konkani fare, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian and the people are friendly. Sai Palace, cottage we stayed at also offered wonderfully light and delicious home cooked meals.

Kashid has both Alibaug and Murud Janjira around which are a must visit if you are staying over a night or two at Kashid. Alibaug may not come across as unique to the seasoned Mumbaiite but Murud Janjira is stunningly exotic (posts coming up soon on these two beach towns). There are also many little rivulets and fishing spots around Kashid that are fun to experience. In monsoon you can find lush green paddy fields, soft gorgeous grass and gushing waterfalls.

We spoke with a few hotel and cottage owners in Kashid about the temperatures there currently and while the day is quite sunny the evenings are pleasant. If you do go, share your story with us at [email protected] Here are some of my pictures from the visits to Kashid.
