In the past year or so Mumbai has seen a rise in the number of interesting yoga spaces. While there’s nothing wrong with your garden variety housing-complex yoga classes, dedicated yoga studios are great for people who want more than deep breathing and cat-cow poses. Here’s an introduction to Andheri’s newest yoga studio, Yoga 101.

You have to make your way through dusty roads of Aaram Nagar, past casting agencies and production houses to find Yoga 101. The name, it turns out is a happy coincidence. It is located in plot no. 101.

Beyond a little courtyard and heavy wooden door lies a beautifully designed open concept seating area, decorated with up-cycled furniture, a couple of rocking chairs, low seating diwans, poufy cushions, cane lampshades and a rustic wooden community dining table, where you will always find a pot of steaming green tea and lemonade. Walking up a flight of stairs, you can symbolically leave the world behind before beginning class in the open airy studio.

This studio was envisioned by Rinku Suri, to indulge her own love for yoga and bring together yoga enthusiasts. Her effortlessly perfect posture and radiant skin is testament to the power of this ancient art, and comes from almost a decade of dedicated yoga practice. I had a little chat with her about Yoga 101 and here’s what she had to say.

You’ve been a yoga student for a while now, what inspired you to switch to being an entrepreneur of sorts?
In August of 2012 I traveled to Cambodia, and even while on vacation I couldn’t resist practicing yoga. So I attended a yoga class over there. Class happened early in the morning when it was still dark, so I didn’t quite get a look at my surroundings. Once I finished, the sun has risen. I walked out to discover a beautiful café, lovely lounge seating and tables, a gorgeous view and lots of happy people. That’s when inspiration struck. I began dreaming of having a space like that of my own.

How did this dream become a reality? How did you find this beautiful space?
When I came back to Mumbai the idea of running a yoga studio seemed like a distant dream that would take years to fulfill. But fate has mysterious ways of working. My family decided to move out of our bungalow at Aaram Nagar and into an apartment elsewhere. Once we moved out, I began looking at my home in a different light and realized it would make a great yoga studio, with a few modifications of course. We were just going to rent out the bungalow to the highest bidder. But I traded that source of income for something more meaningful, something I know will fulfill me.I began re-modelling my home to suit its new found purpose. By June 2013 the home I had grown up in become Yoga 101. Can’t believe I had been living in the same space all these years!

Once you had the space, how did you go about finding the faculty for your studio?
I turned to my years of experience as a yoga student. I picked some of my favourite yoga teachers, whose classes I had attended and invited them to teach at my space. They had each contributed to my yoga journey in some way and I wanted for others to learn from them and be inspired like I was. Yoga 101 has Abhishek Sharma teaching traditional Hatha Yoga, Bijay Anand teaching Kundalini Yoga, Trupti Vedak teaching Yoga & Pilates, Vandana Yadav who teaches Full Circle Flow and Avinish who teaches Core Cardio Yoga. The studio also hosts Kalaripayattu and Capoeira classes.

Do you feel like you’ve achieved what you set out to do? What’s the future for Yoga 101
Of course there’s more! I want Yoga 101 to evolve into a wholesome home from yoga and health enthusiasts; a place where they can unwind and relax as well. I want to start a small massage and holistic healing centre as well. As of now I have a few home decor items on sale in a small shop, I hope it grows. I plan on starting a health food café attached to the studio. And when home-style plates of food start emerging from the kitchen, the Yoga 101 experience will be complete!
